Yep, with tall sturdy gates (as I found out last week - grrrr). Shooting them would be pointless here, there are just way too many. My fences are 6 foot. I used wooden stakes so that I could add a couple more feet if needed. So far so good.
Hot wire around it and nail some bars of soap around the garden. When it rains it will continually spread the scent and they hate it. Shooting them won't help-too many of them?? Sounds like my high dollar hunting lease stinks compared to your garden hunting area. Good luck
DH hasn't hunted in years, so the deer treat our land as the "safe hangout." Does will come to give birth and nurse fawns, big bucks hang out in our swamp during hunting season. Bad news is these things are almost tame.
In the past few years, dog hair, pepper spray and blood meal has been enough to keep them out. But ... it's been raining so much that all the scents are washed away. We may have to break down and do a fence after all.
CDC, we still have the blind down in the swamp if you wish to hunt. But don't eat any deer you shoot in the swamp. They eat cedar and balsam and taste like turpentine
I know planting marigolds around the perimeter of the garden helps, but rabbits like marigolds. That may open a whole nother can of worms. In your case, the marigolds may not even help. A friend of mine uses this stuff which he swears by. He has tried every deterent under the sun, and this is the ONLY thing that has worked for him.
I haven't tried it yet, but I've noticed their place, and they have a lot of deer. You might be able to find a local dealer near you, or may have to order it online. Oh, and he said it doesn't wash away easily when it rains.
30.30, 30.06, 12 ga. with a slug... Or, if not in the country, try this. I left a plastic bag of fertilizer on a fence post. It blows in the slightest breeze, and so far is working. I also bought some little solar lights you stick in the ground at Wal-Mart for $2.50 each. Seems to be keeping both rabbits and deer out. You also may want to put out a pile of apples, a long way away from the garden. They would rather eat apples than cukes and maters!
