I usually let my flock range when I'm home but today it's been raining on and off so I havent let them out yet. I was just taking a break so I went to the barn to say "hi" to the girls and guess what I saw... a chicken hawk sitting on the fence dangerously close to the barn! Do you think Rudy made one peep?! No! He did not!
Currently he's not doing his job and I'm pretty certain he broke the hens neck. We have had no problem with preditors (other than the hawk who would have swept her away!) and our dogs would have alerted us anyway. They are used to the chickens but anything else they would go ballistic!
I recently placed an order for chicks which actually includes Welsummers, so I will take your suggestion, lauralou, and add a Welsummer roo to the order!
Rudy's fate is uncertain at this time. He is young so he may get better with time but in case he doesn't I will have a back up or perhaps dinner if he doesn't! We will have about 40 (can you say addicted?! lol) and 2 roos could probably live happily together with plenty of room and gals to go around if he does grow up!
Thanks to all and a special "hello" to Shiningfeather! We are neighbors by Texas standards! lol
