Deformed Legs? please help! pic...update post 22

As said this is part of hatching...
After trying to help some of our past chicks with some degree of minor success, we now have made the decision not to help anymore. If the chick would not survive or thrive if hatched by a broodie then nature takes it`s course obviously culling any that are in pain. Please remember that using an incubator is an artificial method that will bring on different types of problems that would normally not occur naturally and that we all try and fix problems for our own sake and not necessarily for the well being of the chicks. In our latest hatch 6 days ago we had to cull 1 that had a twisted neck that couldn`t even attempt to drink or eat. It`s heart breaking I know

i thought he was dead this morning and so as i went to pick him up i realized he was still alive but just barely...his eyes had glazed over and he wasnt really moving...well i did what you guys said (ask someone else to do it for me) cause i knew i couldnt cull the poor thing and i pretty much got yelled at by everyone in my family...I asked my sisters boyfriend, he is a hunter so i just assumed he might be able to do it...but he said no and just kinda laughed at me...he told me to just to throw it out into the woods...my sister started saying how it was soo cruel to do something like that to an animal...my whole family said to just put it in a box and let it die...i thought it was so cruel to do that and i kept trying to get them to understand i wanted only to put the poor little guy out of his misery...but they ended up just yelling at me...i really feel like crying because i wanted so bad for the duck to be free of his pain...but i personally could not do it...they ended up making me put him in a box and leave him in it to die...im so mad but i am more sad than anything because before they made me do that i was holding him and he started moving and his eyes were a little less glazed...im not saying he would have made it but i think he was just happy to have someone holding him...i have not even checked because i know he is probably dead and it really just breaks my heart...i wish i could have done what needed to be done...

It is SOOO much easier said than done. I have done that in the past too, just put it in a box and let it die. I have since found a couple people willing to do it for me. Luckily I haven't had to call on them yet.

When I had ducks years ago, I had one that hatched like that. I babied it for about 3 days before it passed. It is better for it and you and put it out of its suffering. Even if it does live, will you be able to take care of it so it can eat and drink properly?

Also, from what I could find out that deformity is called by a calcium deficiency. If you hatched these from your own flock, add some extra calcium to their diet. Another cause is genetics - make sure you have good genetic diversity in your flock to prevent deformities.

My flock has really good genetics but the eggs that this duckling came from was from one of the ducks my friends bought...i said i would keep some birds for them at my house so they picked some not so great, cheap birds out...i didnt see them till after they bought them...they are really ugly call ducks...they just look muttish...and they are kinda big...and they just seem bad quality...i hope to be getting rid of them soon...i just really wanted to try hatching out calls and they were the only calls i had so i figured why not...hmm im not hatching from them anymore i decided...
