Yeah, Delawares are still on the ALBC's critical list. I don't think the ALBC is counting the hatchery version yet. Don't know if that will change--probably will in time.
Right now, I think the SPPA
is counting the hatchery version. So, they took Delawares off their list (also because they changed their cutoff for "historic" to a slightly earlier date--probably because it helps them sidestep the whole hatchery bird issue
).
The truth of the matter is that, as with the RIR, there are two different versions of the Delaware: the breeder version and the hatchery version. The breeder version is endangered; the hatchery version is thriving. Nearly every hatchery in the country sells "Delawares." So, I get kind of tickled when I see people on
ebay or eggbid selling "rare, endangered" hatchery Dels
Finding actual, historic Delawares that can trace their ancestry back to George Ellis's birds in 1940 is very difficult today.
