We are all wiser looking back, so don't worry about it now. Just do whatever it takes to prevent it in the future, if possible.
Those of us who free range know that there is always the possibility of predation loss. I hear a hawk and I look out the window to see how close, watch my birds for appropriate evasive action, watch my dogs to see if they have noticed the threat and are alert. This is something I have learned to do instinctively when I am home. When I am not home, I trust to the dogs and the rooster, do a head count each evening and thank God for another day of no kills. Comes with the territory!
