Delivery Question

I was thinking about ordering a few chicks from a hatchery, but I realized that most of them require you to pick up at the post office. With the virus going on, however, I'm not sure how safe that is. So my question for those who are ordering/have ordered chicks this spring, how is your post office or hatchery handling it?

I work at the post office and we call, BUT you can always request that your carrier deliver them to you. We have had that happen before. Not often, but it has.

If you have any dogs outside or your neighbor does, I’d make sure you’ll be there, though in case the carrier leaves the box on the porch.

One year I ordered and the Post Office called and I went and picked them up ASAP. Never lost a chick. The next year I ordered and my phone was out of order. They gave the chicks to the carrier, she delivered them with the regular mail, but I lost about 4 because of the delay in receiving them. I live 1/2 hour from town and the delay was deadly. I would think if you wear a mask and gloves, picking them up should be no more deadly than a trip to the grocery store, and much less danger actually! Go ahead, order them!

I picked up chicks at the post office almost 3 weeks ago now. I was constantly checking my text shipping updates. Once I got the update that they arrived at the post office at 7:30am I went, even before they got a chance to call me. The office itself wasn't open, so there wasn't very many people there at all. I usually get notices before 9am so usually it's only staff there. But if your county says you need to wear a mask if you go out then do it. Once you get the chicks I'm usually just worried about getting them home into the brooder so I don't stay long other than to initially open the box.
