Denied by local humane society:(

often it seems that the people who operate rescues and humane society sites are just too militant and political for my taste...sometimes I think they are simply on a power trip and the dogs go wanting...I know they want "proper" placements but I have seen good owners like some of the people here, get dumped on and denied...makes me wonder...I have never adopted from any of them as I don't want them up my nose, in my business and I don't need judgement passed on me by some militant idiot...I have four dogs, one 13, 3, 2 and 7 mos...enough dogs to last me a while...I have soemone trying to give me a fm Boxer pup but I just don't need another dog right now...or perhaps ever...all of mine are Dobermans and they are quite enough, and I am an old poop...they are a lot of dog...I hope you find your dream dog...the horror stories I continue to hear about rescues and the like make me very leary of them...

You should write a letter to the editor of your local paper and let everyone know how you were treated. They don't like negavite publicity about their place. I'll bet if you do, they will treat you better next time. Norman

The humane society and the rescue groups continually put down the "backyard" breeders of dogs. But, when you can buy a puppy cheaper from a back yard breeder than you can from the pound, SPCA or a rescue, it is no wonder so many people do.

And they claim you are not "buying" the puppy, you are paying a "rehoming" fee. They can call it what they want, but, when my money is in their hand, it sure does feel like "buying" to me !

I use the local humane society for shots and spaying/neutering but I will continue to get my canine family members elsewhere.

I guess I have had totally different experiences than the rest of you!!!

I have had only great experiences with rescues and the humane society. I know that there are many reasons why they turn people down. Maybe there was someone they liked better for the dog, maybe they really felt that you needed a fenced backyard, maybe they felt that you couldn't afford him, maybe....... a zillion other reasons.

I would call them, calmly and rationally, and explain that you were very dissapointed, and was wondering if there was anything you could do to make you eligible in the future to adopt.

This is ridiculous, we were denied when we went to adopt a Standardbred horse who was blind in one eye because we didn't have more than one field fenced at the time (the one we do have fenced is done safely and it's something like a 2 acre field), as well we didn't agree with the rescue's need to take the horse back after 2 years.

It is a dog and it shouldn't be easier to adopt a human child than it is to adopt a dog.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in animals being abused, but I think the problem with the humane society or these rescue groups is they forget that animals are animals and should be treated as such.

That being said, we just got a great dog FREE from the guy we purchased our Embden Geese from. He had already trained her to work with livestock, she's housebroke, and listens very well!

I would have to say the very BEST dogs we've ever had are the free ones.

I know the feeling too. A local St.Bernard rescue advertised needing foster homes. Well since I own several Great Danes and had plenty of room to foster a Saint Bernard I thought I would give it a try. Well they called my ALL my vets(we have 2 for the dogs and one for the livestock), and then called the neighbors and the groomer. Well the lady said everything was PERFECT and that all was left was the home check. So here they came out to my property to inspect it. First she was suprised that I "lived so far out in the country" without traffic and that I had a very large fenced in area for outdoor play time. Well here came the knitpicking.

1. Steps going into the house were too short. Dogs could miss a step and fall resulting in injury.
2. I had ALL hardwood floors and the dog could slip and break a hip or twist a leg. Again resulting in serious injury.
3. We had unaltered pets.(We raise SHOW dogs. They CANNOT be altered.)
4. We lived WAY out in the country and potential adopters wouldn't want to drive THAT far to see a dog.
5. Oh any my personal favorite......We had KIDS!

Please keep in mind that we own GREAT DANES and we have plenty of experience with XL breeds. If any of those things above were true then my own pets would be in danger of injury.

Icing on the cake: We were DENIED as fosters. But as she was leaving she had the nerve to say that if we were ever interested in ADOPTING and we had ALL our other pets altered just giver her a call. I HATE "RESCUES" AND HUMANE SOCIETIES! No offense to any on here. Sorry to rant. I just know how frustrating it can be.
