I had to get rid of four members of my flock on sunday. They were four roosters that were just too aggressive towards my other birds. But today I go into my coop and notice that one of my girls is just in the corner to herself. not her usual peppy self. I picked her up and she just closed her eyes and cuddled up to me. It was breaking my heart. SHe was thick as thieves with the four guys that I re-homed this weekend, and I'm wondering if she is just depressed? Im sure its not impossible for chickens to be depressed but I'm not sure if it is common? She spent most of the day yesterday roosted up in the coop, and during free range time she only stayed out for a little bit and then went back into the run. I checked her out today and she does not appear to be ill.

Anyone else ever had a depressed chicken?

It takes a while to adjust to the lost of that many flock members, especially if they were as thick as thieves. When I lost a rooster, the hens he was squiring around definitely were subdued for a while.

Thanks everyone. I was also wondering could it be possible she is getting ready to lay her first egg? She went out and free ranged for a bit today but she went inside sooner than everyone and roosted up and is sleeping early. I took her out a few a times on her own and she stayed right with me and even hopped up and slept on me. Just not my normal Snow White today :/

Change in social dynamics, they'll adjust...plus if they are near point of lay that adds a whole other set of behaviors.
How old and how many are the members of your flock?
