Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your hen, hope you are able to deal with the fox.
 
Some may think this is BS but in my experience, roosters are smart sensitive birds. He sounds depressed and traumatized. Add the loss of a hen to the attack and it goes directly to his ability to protect the flock. I'm sure he's having some serious self-confidence problems at this point. If he's cowering in a nesting box, hes terrified. Poor boy.
