Depression? Is it coming?

I'm sure to get flamed for my above post but before you do ask yourself a few questions?

1. How many cars are in your driveway? 30 years ago, most families had 1 car and children rode the bus to school. This accounts for gas and insurance costs.

2. How much packaged food do you buy at the store? 30 years ago, people cooked from cheaper raw goods.

3. Do you have a cell phone(s) bill? Did your parents?

4. How many things did your parents buy on credit?

5. Did your parents have a cable bill? Did they have an internet bill?

6. What size house did you grow up in? Are you in a larger one now with your current family?

You start adding up all the small luxury (most people say they are necessities) items and you can see where a lot of money goes.

That's 'cause we're all spoiled and think we deserve such stuff, and by golly we're gonna have it. Then when we can't afford it, we're gonna blame it on the Govt 'cause you know, the Govt is our daddy and mommy and they're supposed to carry us from cradle to grave.

Right... but don't all of these things contribute to our economy? What will happen when Americans have to say no to all of their luxuries. I think that is where a lot of the problems are coming from... people having to cut back even though their income has not changed.

I have been saying for about 5 years that without some major changes we are headed for another depression. No doubt we are in a recession now, and it will likely get worse before it gets better. I purposely got and stayed out of debt in preparation. Now it's a good time for people to become more self-sufficient, store food, and make preparations for some majorly hard financial times-high unemployment rate, obscenely high fuel prices, and the resulting rise in costs of goods and services. Are we heading for a depression? I think it very well could happen. We have had far too many school drop outs as well as graduates who were not prepared but allowed to pass anyway. We have far too many in society who choose not to work and who do not to carry their own weight. We have far too many who want to live beyond their means. The government can't take care of everyone. Most of us cannot afford unrealistically high prices on fuel and goods. Something's gotta give-our country is in trouble.

I for one have always conserved, car pooled, and I have and will ride my bike if need be. I don't have a cell phone, cable, a new tv, etc. It doesn't mean I'm not concerned about the economy. There is a lot more going on than higher prices for consumers.

What worries me are those who are already stretched. Their pain will have a ripple effect through the economy, and as the number of people struggling increases, it will effect us all. Wake up.

Oh, and I also live in a much smaller home than my parents and my husband has the same occupation that my father did. I'm talking a white collar job, for those who'd like to play classism games.

I've got to agree with MayberrySaint on this one. I'm not going to say I'm perfect and I've never spent money on things that I shouldn't have, but let's face it. People are losing the ability to see the difference between "want" and "need" and it's apparent with the housing market. Take $50k out of your house to buy a new SUV? Sorry, that a stupid decision and I'm sorry you lost your house, but you had it coming.
