Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

You could always vaccinate the chicks that hatch. I thought eggs would still hatch even after being in the frig?
Thanks for sharing Trousers he looked so good right up till the end. He will be missed by many.

If the tumor wasn't caused by Marek's could you maybe get a son of one of his sisters later this summer from the same lady you got him from orginially or maybe one of his brothers still needs of a home ? And still get the brother or nephew vaccinated yourself for Marek's.

I am so sorry about the loss of Trousers. I hope you will find another wonderful boy like he was, your very special little flock deserves a special rooster.
I wish you were closer, I would have had a wonderful boy for your flock that I gave away yesterday, but I am happy that he went to my best friends house where I can see him whenever I want.

That was a beautiful tribute to Mr. Tibs. He was truly one of a kind. It is amazing that at only ten months old he had such gentle gravitas. Also, I have never seen a photo of a hen sitting on her rooster's back. You and your hens were fortunate to have him as part of the flock, but I wish he could have stayed for a much, much longer time. Thank you for letting us get to know your Mr. Tibs.

Chicks must be vaccinated with the inoculation within 24-36 hours of hatch in order for their immune system to start developing immune responses. Birds older than 36 hours of hatch rarely develop protection from the vaccine. From what I understand, with the vaccine that is currently given, it does NOT give the bird immunity, it gives the bird a resistance and a boost so that their body can build immunity.

So they will, I just learned something new!

But, I don't want to raise chicks here if I have Marek's on my grounds. What could I do with the extra chicks? I certainly could not give them away or sell them!! That would be terribly irresponsible. I can't keep more than one or two extra chickens right now, as my coop isn't that big.

I have a lot to think about. If it's not Marek's, was it genetic? I don't ever want to go through that again. My sweetest hen is Coho, but she's had a lot of health problems. Perhaps Willow, but her brother was a real jerk so I don't know if she carries genetics for aggressive roos? There are a lot of unknowns here. I would love to have one of his sons but a lot of things make me nervous I guess. I will wait and see, and leave a few eggs out I guess, but I have concerns about it.

Before I consider anything, I really need to find out what happened to Tibs and make sure I don't knowingly infect any other birds. It is hard to think of another roo right now.

Hatch those eggs!!! Give them to someone to hatch. Marek's does not pass in eggs and the chicks will be born with immunity. I've done it successfully, my daughter has hatched eggs from my chickens, a Marek's flock, with no crossover of disease to her flock. I hatched 17 last December...I lost 2, the other 15 are all well and doing great! They are my success story. they have survived where all others have perished. My flock has a highly virulent form of Marek's..I've lost over 60 birds in 18 months.

Hatch Trouser's babies!!! You will be glad that you did!

How could I possibly give them to someone? There is no way I could honestly say that there is 100% no chance of spreading it that way. It does not pass in the eggs, but the surface of the eggs and any packaging I put them in could have the virus. I'd be devastated if we had the virus here and I spread it.
