Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

I do have photos for you all, I do! I swear! I just have to finish a few deadlines... working on my entry for the Federal Duck Stamp contest now. Anyhow, I thought I'd share a tiny fleck of good news. Cheryl, the lady that I adopted Trousers from, has had her flock tested for Marek's in three different ways and all were negative. Including one blood test sent to Texas A&M. I now truly believe that I got Marek's from the environment here. It would explain why he succumbed so quickly. I have a few thoughts about that in the Trousers thread. So, she still has Trousers' bother and sisters. This summer she set some of the cochin eggs and they have just hatched. Three cute, wonderful baby chicks! These would be Trousers' nieces and nephews, so to speak. I ordered Marek's vaccination and had it shipped to her. She hass vaccinated all three. She's going to raise them there until we can tell the gender... that also allows them to build up immune systems, strong with their broody momma hen raising them. I felt this gave the new baby the strongest possible system. If one is a boy, and all goes well, he will come home with me! (Photo by Cheryl R.)
How exciting! Hope all goes well!

OHMYGOSH Federeal duck stamp?!?!? Thats some pretty heady stuff there Nambroth!!!
You go girl! Hope you are "the one".......

Your post about the 3 peeps being Trousers relatives and the thought of bringing one home with you brought tears to my eyes! THAT would be too special! I will keep my fingers crossed for you....LOL

Thank you! There are generally around 200 entries, and all from skilled artists, so it's a very tough contest. You can see last year's entries here if you are curious: http://www.shduck.com/cgi/read.pl?page=contest
I'd be happy just to make it past the first round. I haven't yet. :)

Wow, Nambroth, all I know about the Federal Duck stamp is from the film, Fargo. Hoping you will at least win to be the three or one cent stamp !!!! And a Trouser's Jr, glad that you were able to send the vaccination to the lady who raised Trousers, and that she was able to use it for the chicks. Will you just take one male, or maybe also a sister so you will have two and it might be a bit easier to mesh two young chickens in your flock instead of one ?

The Duck stamp is not a postage stamp, but a conservation stamp. Waterfowl hunters and those that want to support habitat conservation purchase it. :)

I am not sure-- Cheryl only hatched three chicks and I know she wants a couple of hens. We don't know.. it could be 3 girls, 3 boys, or any mix thereof! I am also nervous about crowding my flock. Their run is huge, but the coop itself is only 6'x8' and I don't want them feeling crowded in the winter when they stay inside a lot. Cochins take up a lot of real estate!

It would be great if you got a new boy for the flock

Thanks to Food Lady and Trousers, we have caught the Cochin bug as well. Four little mystery-colored Cochins are peeping away in the guest bathtub. We would have gotten Faverolles, if they weren't so noisy. Chickens aren't allowed here.

Anyway, if we end up with a roo, perhaps we will name him Trousers, although if he stayed, he'd have to be a house chicken.

Well, that teaches me not to try and learn from films. Nambroth are you running against artists of Hautman family this year ? You might know that name, apparently when it painting wild fowl they are famous in the US ?

Yes indeed. I am only running against one of the Hautman brothers-- the other two have both won contests within the last three years. The rules state that you may not enter again for thee years after winning.
