Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Hi Derpkateers! I haven't fallen in the coop yet (to repeat an old joke.. never get knocked out in the chicken coop, the chickens will eat you!)
I actually did fall and almost knock myself out as I was going out to give the girls a treat this winter. The steps down from the terrace were icy, and I slipped and hit the back of my head.

I landed in a heap at the bottom, all dizzy and covered in the sweetcorn that I was about to throw out for them. I suddenly had horrible visions of being mobbed by chickens desperate to eat their treats off me, and that once they started they might not just stop at the sweetcorn!

As it turned out, they were as shocked as I was, and just milled around me, not quite sure if this was a new feeding technique or some other entertainment I had devised to stop them being bored during the winter! Once I had stood up and brushed the sweetcorn off onto the floor they decided the entertainment was over, and promptly forgot about me completely to focus on the important task of getting more than their fair share of treats.

Although they are serious carnivores (I've seen Igor catch and eat a mouse), I think they would have a pretty hard job to finish me off - in my coop at least you're pretty safe!

I can only laugh because you're ok. But that really made me chuckle!

Katbriar I'm happy that I brought a chuckle to your day! I never take myself that seriously at the best of times, so I don't mind at all that it made you laugh. When I was explaining it to my husband afterwards he laughed himself silly, and I have to admit that it must have been a pretty funny sight. Not so much the fact that I was sprawled at the bottom of the steps, but that the girls must have been standing around me with puzzled looks on their little faces, not quite sure what to do. I was quite glad of the fact that they didn't jump all over me to get their treats - they obviously know better than to bite the hand (or any other part of the body) that feeds!

Haha, oh dear! I'm really glad that you are okay. And, the 'falling in the coop and getting eaten by chickens' is only a joke on my part; while chickens do tend to eat a bit of everything, realistically I don't think any of us have to fear our flocks!! ;)

Speak for yourself! I was underneath the coop halfway out while fiddling with the addition when I suddenly feel something tugging on my leg. I feel it again, and I squirm around to see two of my hens with predatory looks in their velociraptor faces and get another peck! They NEVER peck me when upright, but apparently I'm fair game (or they were testing if I was dead yet) when I'm on the ground. O_O

"testing if I was dead yet"!!!!

Yesterday I was taking a break with the chickens, and as you all might know, Kua has a habit of trying to eat our fingers. Well, apparently she has moved on from this to toes and heels, because suddenly I felt her grab right a hold of the underside of my heel (I had sandals on) and start twisting and tugging! She is the only hen that can not grasp the concept of "That is part of the Fud Lady and won't come off/is not food". Good grief!

She's never broken the skin.. I think it'd be hard for her to do so as mine all forage enough that their beaks are in good shape but blunt, but Kua. Really?!
