Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

great video, is Derperella preening him properly, I keep thinking she is going for his eyes. Well considering how Derp does things it's possible. Yes, you can hear angry growls from Willow.

She is actually preening him, and not after his eyes. I've never seen Derp (or my other chickens) go after one another's eyes. Sometimes Derp will get a dreamy, sleepy expression while she preens him, so I do think that she is not looking for food.

he is a great example of what cochin roos are like- a well bred one, my captain has never been mean to any of his flock- he will try to chase guineas and geese out of his territory- i think you have a gold mine with him!

I think so, too. He's sort of uncanny sometimes; while I obviously anthropomorphize my animals when I write the true stories here, I do it in a joking way. But this guy is sort of strange... I often get the impression that he understands what I'm after when I talk to him. The other chickens, frankly, could care less when I tell them things with "tone" (such as "Stop That!" Or, "come here sweetie!" etc.)... but not Trousers. He seems really sensitive to how I am saying things and appears to make his decisions based on this! He comes to me when I ask him to, he stops doing things when I ask him to stop (he's a bit... clumsy, and as I mentioned before, he mounted Derp backward the other day. She didn't protest but we told him to cut it out, and by george, he DID! My other roosters wouldn't 'cut it out' and I had to physically remove them). The other chickens honestly only care about what I am saying when there is food in my hand. Even sweet Coho ignores me if it's in her best self-serving interest to do so. It's the chicken way. But not Trousers. He listens.

The newest thing is sort of strange. I noticed that when he would fly down from the roost, he'd crash into the water bowl, and for several days I was cleaning up wet bedding. He can't tip it over, it's too big and wide, but he just splashes into it like a whale! I can't move the bowl as it's heated and there is only one outlet in the coop. He's just so huge that he just can't hop down gracefully like the girls. I figure I'll have to build him a little ramp once I get some time and access to the power tools again, but deal with the crashing until then. On Saturday I told him to "wait for me to help him down in the morning", jokingly-- I mean, really. Chickens don't understand concepts like that. Except... Sunday morning, he was waiting for me on the roost well after everyone else had gone outside. Weird coincidence! So I lifted him down. The next day... he was waiting! Weird. Well, he's been waiting every day this week so far-- even today, when I couldn't get out to the coop until nearly 11am. He was patiently waiting for me to lift him down. Now, I know he didn't truly understand me, but he seems to quickly have learned that I'll help him down if he waits for me, which is the sort of concept my other chickens wouldn't grasp (they live very 'in the moment').

Trousers sounds like a wonderful guy! I had a hen having trouble getting down from the roosts, so I put in a step for her. Took a large terra cottta pot turned upside down and put a paver on top. Now she can just jump up and down without having to use wings. No more crashing!

In my coop, I have several diffent levels for the birds to jump up and down. Mr. Fluffers was like that. He was just a clod! So is my boy now, Florus. Anyway, when the big boys can jump down from spot to spot till they get to the floor, there is much less mess.... Mr. F would hit the waterer and the feed dishes other wise.

Have you considered leaving your feeder and waterer in the run? I leave both in the run and take them out at night. The coop would get too messy that way. I know some people differ, but I look at it this way: they are sleeping, so why would they be eating or drinking?

Wow. Trousers is one of the coolest roosters ever.
Remember the video of Derp preening Lorp? She must really care about how everyone looks.
