Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

If you do decide to keep the blind chick and raise it, might I suggest starting a new thread? Not because I think you are intruding here-- definitely not! But that way people can track the chick's progress and help you along the way... without it getting buried in our Derpiness over here. Perhaps that way you can connect and chat with other people who have kept blind chickens.

:thumbsup And then we can all pester you for new stories instead of just Derp's Fud Lady here.

My computer has been out since last Sunday but, just came on(probably as a teaser) so I hurried to BYC. I was going to mention not to use any product with 'caine in it but, so many beat me to it.
Sharp people on here. The two things I've learned from the start on BYC was the above AND Polyvisol pedatric drops (NO IRON) , I can recite those in my sleep.

I think there is a thread on here somewhere for disabled chickens, etc. - to give each other support and advice from people who have been there.

Thank you everyone, I am sorry to say I lost that one and another last night. The second one I lost was very thin and had conjunctivitis in both eyes and I was very intent on treating it but it kept losing weight and before I left them to go to bed last night I was very worried because the skin was bright red. I knew there was a problem but I don't know what. Now that those 2 are gone it seems everyone else is clearing up and there is a different atmosphere in the broody box. Only one chick still has a worrisome eye the feathers curl up and poke and I keep ironing them down w/emu oil which she immediately rubs against one of the other chicks. If it keeps up I will trim them. The pasty butt seems to be nipped in the bud.
I posted here because if it were going to live I wanted some experienced keepers to help me but God has his own plans and probably conditioning me for what I have in store if I continue my current path.
I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the positive support and I hope you know how much I appreciate you all. I will be around. I got some good shots of the lil guy last night but didn't have time to download and post yet. I will in the next couple days. If ya'll know any reason why the skin on the second chick turned bright red I would appreciate a heads up. Thanks again.

Hi everyone, It has been quite a busy day. The rest are doing very well. The second one to die is the only one with the conjunctivitis in both eyes. It was pretty skinny. The fuzz on that one was very pretty apricot pink/orange but it was the only one that hue, so it may have been something wrong. None of the others have any problem except the 3 with raw bottoms improving, I use a drop of emu oil on that when it gets dry. One of those 3 was straining after I treated it but didn't produce anything. Do you think feeding some canola oil would help? These chicks are all Faverolles except 2 Minorca and one surprise that looks like a chipmunk with blue stripes, I can't wait...lol

I don't think any oily product would be good it could be aspirated into the lungs and cause a whole lotta trouble. If you search BYC for "pasty butt," I'm sure you'll find alot of results.

Flynn have you tried fermented feed, they have great results for pasty butt.

Thank you I'll check it out. I stayed up til 5 washing and drying them and they look better today. I didn't realize the emu oil would kill them, I thought the lubrication and healing properties of the emu oil would be better than mineral oil. Any way I gave them a big plate of sand when I realized one of the straining ones had no grit in its croup. They ate the whole plate of it before I got up this morning. My last litter I got in July and raised them outside in the broody pen their whole beginning. I put sand for them but I imagine they must have been getting much more from the ground. I suspect the lil hurt chick got a bacterial infection and spread it to the others. I think the pasty butt was something that happens with the Favs because the feathers get stuck together and the poop builds up and eats up their bottoms, then add the infections the hurt chick probably had and Houston we got a Problem . I hope I can get some rest today working on my taxes! lol.
Thanks everyone. When I get time I will open a thread and post a link. I can't thank you all enough for supporting and helping me through this.
