Gotcha Doc. That's good to know. If the honey were MW'd tho, diluted with other or no, that would destroy any bacteria held in retarded culture state - yes?
Cooled and used then would be better than cane sugar or essentially the same? I've always thought was easier digested but am I mistaken in mah thinkin?
Not sure what "MW'd" means, but if the liquid you mixed the honey with wasn't antibacterial itself, then no it wouldn't destroy those spores. So if you mixed honey with, say, bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds, then sure. It would kill the spores and probably stay antibacterial, depending on how much honey you mixed in. But it wouldn't be any more antibacterial than it already was before you put the honey in. As far as digestion goes, honey is made of glucose and fructose, which are as simple a sugar as you can get. Table sugar is made of sucrose, which is a slightly more complex sugar - it's actually a molecule of fructose and a molecule of glucose chemically bonded together. It's not very hard to break that bond. However, I don't know enough about the digestive enzymes of chicks to be able to comment on their ability to break that bond.

Great posts Eowyn2! That's what I was trying to say, but failing at it. I'm not overly eloquent.

The sun is out right now... thank goodness. All of that snow we got melted, and then we had pouring rain.... several inches of wet, wet, wet out there. I actually had some ponding in the run which has never happened before, yikes! If the sun stays out and starts to dry everything off I will let the girls out to forage this evening, and will try to get you all some Derp photos then...

What an interesting thread this is! Everything is still centered around Derp and all her glory, but now we have a hatch being set, a chick that needed love, and a discussion on the antibacterial properties of honey. This is why I love this thread!

What would Derp do with honey?
Stare at it, and probably ponder it's molecular structure.

Careful, Nambroth, Derp may be derpy, but she has a PhD in biochemistry.

I just realize that I live maybe somewhere kinda close to Nambroth! I'm guessing about 100 miles if I were just Derp-ing straight across the state. Or would that be as the Derp stares? not sure...anyway...that just gave me a happy thought that maybe someday or sometime when it's warm if ever I could actually MEET DERP...and the glorious Fud Lady :-D
