Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

It really seems that the worst of all of this, and the main instigator.. is "sweet and friendly" Chickadee! This is bizarre, because until now this was absolutely not Dee's personality.

Aw, it's always a surprise when this happens!

My barred rock, Debra Jo, has been doing the same to the five 3-month-old babies I've been integrating into the flock. She was definitely not the one I expected to be this way--Diana's the pushy one, Freema's the one that'd get jealous of them, and Cricket is the grumpy one, but Debra Jo's always been such a sweet and level-headed bird! I was genuinely surprised to find she's the only one of all 29 older ladies to actively chase the little darlings. Luckily, we've got a 50x100' run and the little ones have learned where it's safe for them to be.

I wish I had some ideas to help you, but all I can say is good luck getting Chickadee to calm down! I've always had a soft spot for her out of all of Derp's friends. :)

I'm gonna throw this in too, now that there isn't a roo one of the hens [Dee] has decided she is TOP DOG [the roo] and since she hates chicks and Derp looks like a chick, you might be right Nambroth. Lets hope Chickedees jail time helps matters, hope she won't be a repeat offender cuz of the 3 strikes law... and.............. oops ...does that count for chickens too?

I agree with Froggie. Had this happen in my flock when the white Leghorn pullet decided to take the rooster role, but managed to stop the behavior, so this may help you.

The Leghorn, the smallest of all, started regularly mounting the big Buff Orp and peck her head and pull feathers . Very distressful. Lots of screaming. While the other girls would ignore the Leghorn, the BO would squat for her. This happened one time right near me when I was out cleaning the water dishes. I decided to treat the Leghorn as I would a rooster acting that way in front of me, and I pushed her off the BO and pinned her to the ground with my hand for a good long minute until I was sure she submitted. It has been over a week and no more picking on the BO!!!! No more picking on anyone! Guess I'm alpha chicken now.

Yep, i had a hen start mounting one of our other hens - she nearly killed her. We got rid of the offender on the advice of our avian vet (we rehomed the mean one). I never tried the dominance trick, that could do it. Really, Derp should only be squatting for YOU, never the hens.

This is Derp we are talking about here, remember!

None of my other hens have ever squatted for one another.
