Hey there all,

We are looking to add to our flock of hens. We have about a 20 x 25 area with their coop, so they have a little room to roam and play. Right now, we have 5 hens and would like to add to that. Is there anyone in here around the Des Moines area that might know where a good place to get more hens is? There is an ad on Craig's List, but my 16 yo and I are a bit hesitant to go that route.

Thoughts are appreciated,

TD

If you are hesitant to get from a Craig's list seller, this may be better option. I'm not sure what your concerns are, but if safety is a concern, then agree to meet at a public place. :idunno Obviously never choose to go alone.
You always have the option to get hatchery chick orders. Now that it is warm, some hatcheries will ship smaller orders. You may also call around different feed stores, as many sell chicks this time of year. Around my area, there is a 6 chick minimum. This is a ruling to discourage random individuals buying live toys for their children. After short time they do not know what to do with chick. :(
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and :welcome

Hi Todd,

So this last fall I bought some hens from craigslist from a gal that was just downsizing. Once I got them home and comfortable with the other chickens they've been some of my best layers! I think that it is pretty reliable. I use it to sell my baby goats due to the fact that its easy and selling livestock on facebook marketplace isn't acceptable. Hope my good experience leads to some good finds for you!

Awesome, they are so much fun! I have pygmy fainting goats. Right now I have a billy that is ready to go home today. 1 that is ready in a month. And a set of twins (who look nothing alike) that will be ready in two months! Other than that we will have some more coming this fall! And I just live 20 miles west of Des moines area so super close!

pygmy fainting goats? oh wow, if I tell my wife this you'll be meeting us very soon LOL...ok, I'll talk with her tonite and get back with you. maybe we could talk on the phone soon as well?

awesome...we have chickens and dogs and I swear my kids take better care of the animals than themselves LOL I'll give you a holler very soon...I just texted my wife LOL and we are talking now. I really want pygmy's and if they are fainting then even better LOL. We prolly wouldn't be ready right away as we'd want to build a separate pen than our chickens. What timeframe would you have 2 or 3 available?
