My name is Diane! My husband and I starting raising chicks last April. We started with 85. Yes 85. McHenry County has gotten a hold of us and told us no and that we can only have 6. 6 chickens doesn't even feed our family daily. We have gotten rid of 50 to wonderful homes. I really don't want to get rid of anymore. These chickens have helped me incredibly with my depression from post concussion syndrome. I have a brain injury from a scooter accident that happened August 2016. These chickens are my buddies! They bring me such happiness. I would like to know if anyone has ever been successful in changing their zoning to agriculture for their property? Or successfully obtaining a variance.

My town has permitted me to have more birds than allowable by zoning provided they can inspect the coop/run/birds at any time and deem it sanitary and chickens in good health AND no neighbors complain. Perhaps a well drafted proposal would allow you more than 6, but I'm not sure how many more. Just a thought, if some of your birds are meat birds, so your number declines over time as you feed your family, it may help with convincing them. So if you had 12, but if you explain that you will use one a month for a year to feed your family and your numbers would shrink, perhaps it would be viewed in a better light. Good luck.

We are not allowed to have chickens in our city, and our HOA does not know yet. However, my sister has autism and they serve as a therapy source for her. So, if the HOA ever gets involved we might have to involve the city. I am sorry that the town is not letting you have the number you want:(
