one of my 2 year old buff orpington hens had dried blood on her head yesterday. i cleaned it off with luke warm water, but now i can see that the back half of the comb is loose from her skin and there is a small sore on top. there is no more bleeding, but it's still floppy. she doesn't seem too bothered by this, only when i try to tend to it.

i don't know her weight, but she's the smallest, i would guess about 4 lbs. her behavior is normal, she's feeding and drinking, and she seems to be alert. she eats layena pellets and greens from the yard. we don't use any chemicals on the lawn. hard to tell with 6 birds what poop comes from which butt, although it all looks ok to me, as far as poop goes. they live in a large coop with straw bedding.

i don't know if her comb shoudl be reattached, removed altogether, or left to fall off or heal. i'm reluctant to have it removed, as it's getting to be pretty hot around here and summers are awful, but is this something critical? again, she seems happy, there is no more blood, and the top of her head looks better than yesterday morning.

any help much appreciated.

I'd cut it off... but there is nothing wrong with leaving it. It will either heal or fall off naturally, if that's what it's going to do.

wow, that was super quick! thanks. it didn't seem to be a big deal, but this is something i never thought would happen. if she's happy, mama's happy

Is there a rooster in the pen with her? I had a Buff Orpington roo one time that was aggressive with the hens and done the same thing to one of them. He's not with us anymore.

no, the only male is a duck. we have two broody ducks & a broody hen, so he's been hangin out a lot with the other two girls. maybe he got a lil frisky! half the run is 6 foot high chain link with gates on either end, the other half is geen poultry fencing on one side & 3 foot chain link backed by a wood fence on the other, so no one else is gettin in. i thought she mighta bumped it on the door, but now i think elber was lonely...
