I've been counting and recording every single egg, using the free chart so graciously created by Lisa Steele of fresheggsdaily.com. On the graph, I thought my best layer was Goldie, an Easter Egger! Of course, she started earliest, and some of the others have just started last week. A few still haven't laid yet.
But when I counted how many eggs over the days each had been laying, I got a very different picture! (Not being a whiz at math, I used this simple percentage calculator: https://percentagecalculator.net/)
I found that Goldie is actually laying less than all the others!
Now of course, this is only what these pullets have been doing in their first weeks and months, but at the end of the year I'll have the final true picture....
What will I do when I know who is laying the most and who the least? I've made pets of each one and taught them to trust me, so I never cull. But I do like to be aware what my entire chicken operation costs me compared to the eggs I get. I'll just enjoy my girls and tuck this knowledge away for my choice of breeds the next time I buy chicks!
