Deterring dogs.

After reading this the first time, I went and had a double brandy, only because I have no valium. I have said this before and I will say it again. Never shoot any animal with anything that will not kill it. All you will do is make the predator mad and I will read about you in the paper the next day. The only reply that made any sense is the one from rufus. If you don't want to kill the dogs, which I can unstand, report them to the police every time you see them out. Keep a record of this. Then when someone or something is attacked, you can bring out the record. They won't be able to say, this is the first time lets just it slid.

If you want the dogs gone, next time they come on the property walk right up to them with a spray bottle full of amonia. Spray it right in the face. It may take twice to imprint them but it will not take a third.

The dogs will sound like they are dieing, they will be OK.

This is not a good idea, especially with highly pain tolerant breeds like pits. It may work, but it is highly likely to just make him VERY angry more likely to attack you. Pepper spray is not a good dog deterrent.

ETA: The ammonia may work better, but I would still be scared to use it. You have to remember that pits were bred to tolerate an immense amount of pain and that pain just fuels their fury.

I agree that this is a bad idea with any HIGH PREY DRIVE dog. Not just a pit type. A good record of infractions and animal control calls is a good start. Then send a record of it to the owners noting what will happen the day these dogs do some serious damage and the charges they will face.

The ammonia will work. I had a pit that was charging me when I would come to stop at a stop sign on my motorcycle. I called animal control many times and they were no help. A friend told me about it so I tried it. After the first use the dog would lay in the front yard any time I pulled up and cry. It was quite funny.

Of course for a dog coming on my property and growling at me I advocate lethal force. That is a territorial dog that is trying to take over your property God forbid he try to take over a child's back yard.

Call the State Police. If the local department won't help go above them. When I lived
in Georgia my Siberian Husky killed a wild duck in a pond. I was given $300 in fines and
had to go to court. Georgia has tough laws against unleashed dogs. The local guys may
not help but the state guys should.

I know you want non-lethal, but based on the fact the dog sounds like a threat to
animals and people alike, I would eliminate it. I have a Pitt mix myself so I say that
with consideration and refrain.

I agree with you in theory. If you are going to shoot an animal it should be done to kill.
If someone is caught shooting a dog with anything it can look very bad and is illegal
based on the circumstances.

If an unkown dog was in my yard and threatening myself, family, or chickens, I would
not refrain from using my paintball gun on it. My paintball gun and handgun are
quickly accessable for both deterence and personal defense. A paintball gun is
nonlethal and effective at detering animals. Most of the unleashed dogs who have
passed through my yard have been friendly so I have never had to shoot one.

the1much had what I thought was a good idea on another post on another thread, shoot them with a paintball gun. Then call animal control as often as you can. I don't know if shooting them with a paint ball gun is illegal.
