Today I was gone for the day, a rare occasion. My husband called to tell me we had a problem. he found feathers in the garage!
I just purchased 4 baby chicks and kept them in a cage in the garage like I have in the past. This time with me being gone someone left the garage door open and the cat we now have got in and took one of the chicks. I had an hour drive home and cried all the way. I got home and went to check on the other three and noticed that one of the wings on one was bloody. It appears to be broken at the joint V part for lack of name, and it is bloody with feathers missing and broken.
I separated her from the other chicks but I don't know what to do, will she live? do I clean and put on antibacterial ointment?
the spray I got from the feed store? I am just so heart broken and angry but thats a whole nother story.

Please help me if you know......... I have an old caring for animals book that covers a lot so I'm going to go pull that out now.
Thank you!!

Sorry for your loss. Just clena the wounds with disinfectant soap and water, then apply either Vetericyn or plain Neosporin. It may be in shock, but if it lives through the night, it may survive with care. For broken wings, a figure 8 bandage may be applied to older birds, but I am not sure that that would be appropriate for a tiny chick. Get some 1/2 inch hardware cloth metal fencing at the farm store, Lowes, or HomeDepot, and put it around your cage to keep paws and even mice from their cage. I would quickly go get a couple more chicks to brood with your survivors. Sorry for your loss, and I hope the chick makes it.

thank you for your help. I will get the hardware cloth as I have some here already. I'll google the wrap you mentioned and see but it is tiniest little one. I really hope she makes it and thank you, monday am I will go get a couple more. Anyone want a cat? :-(

I feel your pain. I had a chicken and rooster cross the fence the other day and before you know it my dog snapped both their necks and just "smiled" at me looking proud. I wanted to cry and yell all at the same time but I know its just instinct. My chickens now stay in their run/coop all the time now. No yard time. The little one should be fine if it makes it through the night and doesn't get an infection. just keep Neosporin on it for a few days and keep her separate for a while. Im not sure there is anything you can do to fix the break at that age. good luck fingers crossed

Oh I'm so sorry w2teals, how heart breaking. {{HUGS}} I understand exactly. I have little chihuahuas and they are always out in the yard with the hens but the cat is fairly new, about 8 months and the first time here with new chicks. I have her set cleaned and neosporin but just not sure what to do with the wing.......its hanging lower than the other, and all a wreck. She is sleeping tho.......I keep checking about every 5 minutes and she is snuggled nicely in her food dish :-(
