Bruised or cracked ribs hurt for a long long time and hurt like the dickens, making even breathing seem a painful task. I've had simple rib bruising hurt for several months. I advise an x-ray to eliminate the possibility that it is cracked, as another tumble could shatter a cracked bone easily in the elderly, and drive the bone through a lung or other vital organ.
As for the neighbor's dog; a chicken killing dog, especially one as intent on killing as to destroy their hutch, needs to die. I wouldn't even bother with 're-homing' it, as that's just putting your problem into someone else's back yard. A bullet between the eyes or heart ought to do the trick.
Someone "rehomed" it already-that's why I have a problem in my backyard

Tthere is NO animal control here. We are 20 miles from nearest town. That town has 2500 people in it. The neighbors ARE feeding mama dog. She wasn't starving and she isn't starving now. She ate 3 chickens Friday and a rooster Saturday. She'll come back-I'm waiting.
if they are feeding her then can't they pen her and the pups so she doesn't come to your yard?

are there any state animal charities you can call to come get her?

I have been in your boat. Do what you must. Then turn around and get back into positive thinking to protect your chickens from future incursions. First dog I shot was not my last. It took some anti-dog investments to get a handle on not my dog issues.

I had a secure coop (I thought) 1/2 inch hardware cloth all around coop and run. Tuesday, my partner (he's 84) fell, bruised elbow cracked ribs on right side. We limped along till Friday, he is unable to get into/out of bed without help, pain meds-dizzy so I have to help him up/down to bathroom etc...
Friday, I left the birds in runb did not let them free range. 5:30 or so I help partner bathroom, change clothes, back to bed, stayed with him for about an hour til he is resting easy.
Go out to collect eggs, birds iwere fine @ 4 when I checked, now 7:15 and utter carnage. 6 girls and a cockerel. Run is destroyed, 2x2 chewed until it broke, hcView attachment 2322439View attachment 2322440 ripped out of screws. 1 dead 3 missing, 1 game pullet and rooster loose. No idea what got em. Almost dark, secure coop with pullet, rooster won't go near coop, he slept on table on back porch. Yesterday, plywood run holes. 5 p.m. I see dog with pink collar chasing rooster across yard. By time I get gun, dog is happily carrying rooster home (next door). Neighbors called, their out of town(also family) state they don't have a dog with pink collar-there's a stray that showed up and had puppies on their porch. Long rant, 1 chicken left and I give up. I won't try to have anything alive here. That dog WILL DIE- I'll shoot it, trap it poison it-whatever it takes. Neighbors stated shoot it I have permission. Don't dump your problem on someone else.
Matejka I hope you could put a trail/wildlife camera out before you kill the dog. I’m playing detective by looking at the damage to your coop as closely as I can. I’m looking at the top picture and don’t see any rips in the hardware cloth along the edges. And it looks like it was pulled out. A dog wouldn’t normally pull a section of hardware cloth but an animal like a raccoon or bobcat with those types of claws could.
The bottom picture also looks like the HC had been pulled. Im not sure about the hunks of missing wood but could a dog use its front teeth to nip off the wood like that?
I think you need to identify the culprit for sure then put it 6’ under for good.

At his advanced age these injuries and the resulting immobility are dangerous and not seeking the appropriate medical treatment might result in even worse conditions: pneumonia, pneumothorax, thrombosis etc.

Forget the dog for the moment and get your partner the much needed medical help, you can take care of the dog-related issue afterwards.

This is 1 of the boards the hardware cloth was screwed into.

This happened between 4-7 p.m. Friday evening. I saw the butt (back haunches) of dog as she ran behind shed and

towards neighbors house. Sat afternoon About 5:30 p.m I SAW same dog chasing, catching and carrying rooster next door.

We did seek medical care for him. Not much you can do for cracked ribs, they don't wrap them now like they used to.

Well, seems that I misread that part. I hope he will get better soon, but I know that these injuries take their time and patience to heal.

Best wishes.

It was a long post. He fell Tues evening, and wed, thurs I spent inside mostly with him. I usually am outside during day. We don't use a/c at all, so sometimes it's nicer outside than inside (unless it's over 100 ) then it's miserable everywhere. Since I wasn't out as much I guess dog noticed and took advantage of it.
