Went out this morning to let my girls out and found something had gotten into the run and dug under the coop. Upon further looking I found one dead bird and parts of others. All in total over 20 birds are gone. I found one little chick running in the dog pen alive. When I went on a bigger search I found the dogs that killed them with the dead birds actually in their mouths or what was left of them. I told the people that own them what they had done and got told Dogs will be Dogs. My husband went out and bought birds to replace them but it doesn't help that most of the ones killed were pets with names. I only have one RIR, 3 EE's and a BR, and a cochin left of the original ones. The money used had been ear marked for meaties.

The reason they were able to get in is the wind blew open a not so well latched gate.

You are in your legal right to kill any dog that you find killing or harassing your birds on your property. Additionally, the dog's owners are responsible for replacing your stock.

If you can't SSS, then catch them and take them to the pound. They will have to pay to get their dogs out. Also, you can make a report with photo documentation to animal control or the police.

I called the Sherrif and they said shoot em. Since I don't own a gun thats not going to happen. But they can be trapped and hauled to the pound. These same dogs came into my yard this past winter and killed my daughters cat in front of her. There is no leash law out here so technicly they are doing nothing wrong. I did leave the bill from what my husband bought today with them. And told them Bullets will be Bullets. They do not know I don't own a gun. This may change soon though.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. That is an awful discovery to make. I am concerned that the dog owners weren't more understanding- if you can, take pictures of the damage and document the cost of replacing both the birds (although nothing takes the place of a beloved friend) and in dog-proofing your run, in case this becomes a habit on the dogs' part.

im so sorry......did you "ask" the owners to replace your birds??....what did they say???..i just dont understand people....if anything i own, killed or damaged something of someone elses, would ASK to replace it!....were they even sorry for what happened??

One of the babies made it back alive. My coop and run buts up against the dog kennel for extra protection. She had somehow escaped into there and out of it since shes tiny and run across the street. The neighbors just found her and brought her back thirsty and hungry. She was happy to see us hopping up on my shoulder and peeping then closed her eyes and went to sleep.

Oh and yes I asked them if they would replace them. Was told they are "just" chickens. I won't see anything out of the whole thing. But I can tell you the dogs will never kill another one of my birds.

i would DEMAND they pay for them....tell them..."JUST PAY" for the "CHICKENS"!!!!!....ask them if their mother ever taught them to relpace what they damage....(or kill) !!!!!

Just kill the dogs when they come back to your land. Leg traps and a gun.No point in talking to neighbors again.SSS so as not to start a NFH conflict.
