Dewinged? is this what it sounds like it is?

I know pinioning is required by law on some birds in some places because of fear they may get out an bread with native birds but I have never heard of dewinging.

De-winging a bird literally means removing a structural bone. :C

If there are any laws requiring chickens to be dewinged I'd be very skeptical if your allowed to have them in the first place.
Really I think it's purely for those chickens raised in closed spaces or those who might have a chance to fly off.
I do know that a few meat raiser do it because some of the chickens will fly up and roost on beams next to lights burning themselves.

I have not seen the process done in video, photos or in person so the details of how it's done is a blank for me.
In veterinarian practice I imagine the animals to the be chalked up on pain killers or asleep while the bone is carefully extracted.
However in hatcheries where it's only a few cents more I DOUBT it's done this humane. I have seen some of the plans and details for some of the machines used. Though I don't know how it used, it looks like a device to hold them still...

I really hope if anyone has any information about this process it will be shared...Heres a post by 4hkidsmom who talked to a hatchery about it.

Probably purchased by people cramming flighty layers into small areas.

Don't want flighty birds, just get some heavies. If it looks like a boat its not going to fly far.
