I've known they were common down south, and now the midwest. I recently read an article regarding game birds such as pheasant and grouse infected with them in midwestern states.
Wild birds in New York had them in another article I read.
I'd say they are more common than people think and easily spread, particularly migrating birds. Maybe not so common in chickens (hopefully.)
