Dewormer

I purchased some Wazine 17 (Piperazine) dewormer at the feed store yesterday, brought it home, read the instructions, and it says DO NOT use if eggs are for human consumption. Well, duh, of course I'm eating the eggs. Is there a dewormer that you use when you are using the eggs for food?

I'm not sure, but I think that all of the commercial wormers probably have a withdrawal period. For tapeworms you can use pumpkin seed, but that won't help with the other worms. Even if a commercial chemical wormer said there was no withdrawal period, I would err on the side of caution and not eat the eggs for a week or so anyway. JMHO

How about good ole cayenne pepper? Chickens don`t have the heat receptors like other animals, so pepper in one end, worms run out the back. Works good. Repeat in 10 days and every six months after. Mix it with a small amount of feed and make it red. Chickens love it and you can eat the eggs. Cheap, too.........Pop

Are you supposed to treat them as preventative maintenance, or only AFTER you see evidence of worms? We've never done it before, are we supposed to be doing this?

Actually, it`s something I`ve always done as a matter of maintainance. Never had worms in my flock that I know of. I do know others that have dealt with infestations with cayenne. Rule of thumb, if wild birds can get to your fowl, they will have worms........Pop
