My chickens have tapeworm and I am trying to find a dewormer that will help with this. It doesn't have to focus on tapeworms, as long as it can get rid of them.

What dewormers should I use? I would prefer one that could go in water.

Use Equimax equine paste to kill tapeworms. It can be purchased at a feed store in the Equine section. Dosage is 0.03ml per pound of weight or 0.15ml for a 5lb bird, given orally to each infected bird.
Putting it in water is totally ineffective.

I will do my best. I have caught them all before to give them pills, so I might be able to get them to do this.

It's best to worm your birds early in the morning while it's still dark. Bring a flashlight. They cant see in the dark and it's easier to worm them. Just snatch one off the roost, cradle the bird in your forearm, pull her wattles down using your fingers on your cradling arm and her mouth will open. Put the paste in her mouth with your free hand and release her wattles and she will swallow the paste. Then release her and grab another bird off the roost and repeat the procedure. Make sure you have everything you need prior to worming them, and staged in the coop or pen. Easy peasy.

That's what I used for tapeworm (confirmed by necropsy) before. It worked well, but it's hard to get the dosage correct because the paste is not very runny.

You can purchase liquid praziquantel but it's expensive.
The problem with adding wormers in water is that you dont know if a bird is going to drink it, or drink enough of it to be effective, and sick wormy birds dont drink at all.

Thank you! I did not know that pulling their waddles would open their mouths!

Night time is most definitely the best time to do things with chickens.

The warning on the back of that medicine is a little worrying. It says "Do not use on horses intended for human consumption." I reallly really hope that is just bad wording on their part.

Hi, can I ask if this would work? I just discovered tapeworms in my young chickens. This is on Chewy.com

You **could** use that, but my goodness, the bottle is $178.+ That's quite expensive it seems.

Equimax and dosing is mentioned in Post#2 it's a much better price and just as effective. You can order it through chewy or find it at TSC.

Okay thanks! The local tack and feed has equimax, and another liquid dewormer that i can use as a preventative in their water, so I'm going to get both. I hate few things in life, and tapeworms are at the top of that list! 😱
