Deworming with safeguard

Hi all.

I have a mixed flock of chickens, which includes a broody hen and her 4 week old chicks. Someone in the flock has roundworm, so I need to treat everyone. My questions:

Is it ok to treat the water with safeguard, since the little chicks will be drinking it?

If not, what is the dosage for an individual chicken with safeguard liquid for goats?

I might have found an answer. .23ml/pound for oral administration, so 1 ml for a 5 lb bird, for 5 days. Does that sound right?
You are correct, the dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days to treat Roundworms only.

5 X 0.23 = 1.15 a lot of folks round up to giving 0.25ml per pound since it's usually easier to find the markings on the syringe. So if you wish to do that then a 5lb hen would be given 1.25ml (5 x 0.25 = 1.25)

I wonder if you can advise... In a chicken- vet-&-layperson FB group, I found information that said liquid Safeguard was to be given at that same 0.25ml/lb, but for 3 consecutive days... and then repeat in 10 days. So that's what I started to do this go-round: I've done the 3-day dosage, prepared to repeat... However, I've been searching for a few days now to find out if that "repeat in 10 days" means 10 days after that 3rd day of dosing, or after the initial dosing day.
And now in my search, here, I discover this one-day or five-day protocol! So I may not have dosed them enough? And I'm still wondering when the 2nd round should start (no one has responded on any FB group to that initial question)... and even more stressful, Tomorrow would be 10 days since the initial 1st dosing day!
Do you - or someone else out there! - have any thoughts on this?

After posting my question to you, now I'm thinking I might need to contact an avian vet on the phone somewhere, and see what they might advise. Because I can't find anywhere in this group where a 3-day protocol is recommended at all.

I was treating for roundworms after finding one in one of my ten chickens' stool. I normally use Valbazen, but I thought I should mix it up, so to speak. I've usually had to deworm once/year, but this year I treated them with Valbazen in late spring, and already here, at the end of summer, I'm needing to treat again.

If you are treating Roundworms, then do the repeat 10 days after the 3rd dose you gave. That should be just fine.

There's no need to "mix it up" by switching from one benzimidazole (fenbendazole/safeguard) to another benzimidazole (albendazole/valbazen).
Stick with Valbazen, then you dont have to worry about dosing so many days with Safeguard. Two dosings with Valbazen is much easier.
If you're worried about worm resistance to Valbazen, dont worry. It would take years. Even then, simply increase dosage.

If you're still going to use Safeguard, dose your birds 5 days in a row. That way it gets rid of all types of poultry roundworms, not just large roundworms.
