Since I’m new to raising chickens, I was wondering about deworming. Do you do it randomly or only when you see worms?

It’s recommended to do it in the fall and again in the spring. I’m naughty and don’t because it doesn’t really cross my mind. Depending on the kind of dewormer there is a length of time the eggs shouldn’t be eaten.

I recommend collecting fresh poop and having a vet run a fecal test on it.
No need to use medicines unnecessarily.

You won't usually seem worms unless the bird is so infested with them and there is no more room in their body so they start pooping them out.

In addition to what KikisGirls stated, by the time worms are seen in feces, internal damage has already been done.
Either take fresh fecal samples from a few of your birds to a vet for testing, or if you live in a warm wet/moist environment, worm your birds frequently without testing to break the worms lifecycle.
