he's stick building the nest box out of 2x6s!!

I told him they're going to lay eggs, not drop bombs in it. He said "Might as well do it right." They're heavy birds, but not OSTRICHES! Or maybe he's anticipating an elephant might lay an egg in there occasionally. Or perhaps that these are bricklayers, rather than egg layers. It's going to be the sturdiest nest box ever built! And as much as I've been telling him to just make a box out of plywood, he just will not listen. "I framed the rest of the coop like this, why stop now?"

I suppose it'll have steel doors and a retinal scan to unlock it. We'll see!! I just laugh to myself and hang out here with you all!

Sounds like my husband. Don't ever try to take anything down that he builds! He always says "well it never falls down does it!"

Have him make the nest box large enough to use for a tornado shelter, you never know!

Is your hubby missing a long lost brother? I just had the same exact conversation with mine regarding the egg boxes. He is insisting plywood is not sturdy enough! Men gotta love em!

Lol thank god I build all my own, on my own, by myself! LOL My dad drives me crazy cause he wants it perfect, i feel like my boyfriend does it all wrong, so I do it myself! And that way if I screw up I can cuss myself(which happens often)!

Thats funny though! How did you get him to build it anyway?

By miracle, and nothing less. I don't even know. He is a bit of a conspiracy theorist/end-of-the-world type, so all this talk about food shortage and government control of the food supply got him thinking. Lots of his co-workers raise chickens for eggs and meat (that's where we get ours currently), so they put the pressure on, I suspect--and with no involvement from me!!!

So, after 3 years of me leaving Mother Earth News articles all over the place, buying books on keeping chickens, and having every single person he mentioned it to tell him how easy it is to do, he said to me one day, "Honey, I have good news, not so good news, and bad news." I said, "Give me the good news first." He said, "The good news is there is no bad news." So I said, "What's the not-so-good news?" and he said, "I'm building you a chicken coop." **This was not so good news for him because he does NOT like to work around the house or yard, hates to use tools, and generally prefers to nap the weekends away.** However, it was VERY good news for me, and despite enough cussing to earn him a star on the walk in Hell, he's very proud of his work. I've been bragging about him to all my friends and buttering him up, too. That, and I have almost-2-week-old chicks about to flit right out of their rubbermaid tub!!!

Oh noooo! Do not discourage your DH! Mine tried to cheap out on me. He has witnessed firsthand what a coon can do and still he tries to cheap out on my pen.

Be happy you have a DH who will build a fort knox for your babies!

Very impressive coop, building skills, and bravery on top of it all!! Plus, if a chicken WERE to turn into an elephant, it could lay an egg in your box no problem!!

Oh, and looks like we're neighbors--I live in Troy MO, just 10 miles or so further out than Wentzville! Coop building just got rained out here, but it's been great brooding weather--light only at night! Nice to "meet" you!!
