dh is thinking

He shouldnt get rid of them if you really want to keep them. I'd TELL him, that i'd be willing to re-home SOME of them..(you decide how many)..but that he WONT be getting rid of anything without your approval first. Period.
*see how easy that was??!*

I think, just my thinking, that if there are too many birds to enjoy and it has become more work than sweet little pet, that it is time to cut back.

I think, again just my opinion, that 14 - 21 ( 2 -3 of each breed ) is plenty! We have that many now

and we have a family of 4.

The work load is minimum. The clean out is easily managed.
The number of birds is small enough that EVERY bird gets individual attention from us every day. Both my husband and I work over 40 hours a week. However, with this small amount of birds - - we get them taken care of every night in about 15 minutes and that includes time to hand feed treats every night !

LOVE IT

I would just keep 4-6 of the best layers and sell the rest off.

I agree that maybe 6 or 12 would be better. With that many, there is far less coop cleaning, especially with the deep litter method. I am sorry that you both are having health issues and can understand if you decide that it is best to go to zero. You and your DH are in my thoughts I hope you feel better!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I know it will be a toughy decision, but sometimes when human health-issues get in the way you soon have animal health issues. I would think 100 chickens would be planty of work (not just the daily food/water but the clean-up would be big). Maybe you could keep one of each breed? That way you still have a variety, but the daily maintenance would be manageable?

Agreed...maybe just keep a few and see if that works? If not, then at least you KNOW and wont second guess yourself later on.
Hope everything goes better with your health.

I'm sorry you're not doing well. I've not been on the board in a while due to serious hand problems...I'll put you on prayer list....Maybe you could find someone who would tend them for some eggs?

I may be dreaming, but I'd try to find a way to get some help that way after I cut down to those I really wanted to keep...

God bless y'all.
