Get an assortment of books about new babies from the library; specifically look for ones that talk about the items needed. Read through the recommendations--you will probably find some contradictory information. If you posted a thread here of "what are the most useful and the least useful" nursery items, you will likely find some people that think a thing was extremely useful, a must have and others who thing that that exact same thing was a complete waste. Probably the only thing that would be universally agreed upon would be diapers, but even there you will have differences of opinion as to the type of diaper.
Anyways, have your daughter looks through the recommendations and think through her lifestyle and come up with what she feels are essentials, and what is unnecessary. Then realistically decide what you want to help with and where you want to draw the line. Realize that not everything has to be acquired before the birth.
Make sure that any furnishings or equipment purchased meets current safety standards, especially if you purchase used. I agree that you should not purchase a used carseat. Over the years I have seen recalls on just about every type of baby product: nipples, bottles, pacifiers, cribs, play pens, high chairs, even clothes.
