DH vs. chainsaw, and the winner is....

watch the dermabond. I personally think its useless I had a finger dermabonded. Kept coming open doctor said would leave less of a scar. whos cares about scars I wanted it to stay closed so I could work. I work with the public doesnt look good when you start bleeding in front of them. On a knee moving I would worry it could come open easier than the tip of a finger. Glad he is ok. Sounds like something my hubby would do.

I asked him that very question tonight while he was sitting with his leg elevated. He gave me "the look" but quickly conceded that I may be right.

ETA: Sheila, the doctor that applied the Dermabond used the ENTIRE tube on the wound. First he put some in the cut, then he applied about 3-4 coats on the outside. Hubby's knee looks like he got shellaced (sp?). I doubt a bullet could penetrate all those layers

Seriously, we're more worried that he'll tear good skin by bending down since the glue stuff is so stiff and tight. Guess it doesn't hurt to have a little reminder of his close call...

Another key "safety" factor...they shouldn't be working alone. My dh was working in the woods cutting up firewood...alone...many years ago. He had a tree down already and was cutting it up. Using one foot to steady the limb as he was cutting through it with his chain saw when it hit a knot and bounced...sawing through the calf of the leg that was attached to the foot holding the limb steady! He had to use his belt as a tourniquet and drive himself to the E.R. on a stick shift no less! he cut through to the bone. He was crutches for months and had to go to therapy since he cut through muscles, etc. He carries the scar to this day. Did he learn to not work alone??? no, he will still work alone. He says he can't call someone to come when we need the wood. Now though, I go with him if I am home and know he is going to cut wood.

I have always worried about him being out alone, too. I usually help by moving the cut logs to the truck but this time he went out alone since he wasn't cutting firewood; just taking out trees that were casting shadows on our solar panels. Think I'll insist on him having "grown up" supervision from now on

I glad your DH live to tell the tale. I also with him a speedy recovery.

My DH's best friend was a tree trimmer, and we had planed for him to be DH's best man. He somehow cut through is safety line while 80 to 100 feet up. He didn't make it. His brother was there when it happened. It left a hole in to lot of people's lives. So guess my thought is that just because one is a professional doesn't mean that something can't happen. DH and I have done all of our own tree work, and I completely respect DH's sense of caution when we are working with the chainsaw.

Totally.

The saying at hubby's work is that, "Tree trimmers don't retire, they expire."

Needless to day, I worry daily a little bit for that work pickup truck to show up in the driveway, and we currently carry three life insurance policies on his head. He knows too many dead treetrimmers.

I know how you feel. My 17 year old son was trimming a tree 2 days before school started this fall and bounced a chain saw off the inside of his knee. He needed 7 stitches and had to walk around with an ace bandage mobilizing his leg for 10 days. This was also just days before his opening football game for his senior year. He is young, healed fast and is back out there playing, but Coach demands he not touch a chainsaw until after the season is over!

I hate those Kevlar saw chaps. They are hot, heavy, and a dang nuisance.

I've got a pair with a nice cut on the upper left thigh. In the chaps. NOT in me.

I cuss them every time I have to put them on, but I do put them on every time I use that saw.

Good for you! I was going to buy a pair for him until he insisted that he wouldn't wear them. He no longer has a choice in the matter - unless he lets me increase his life insurance!

A long time ago I cut my hand and it needed stitches. I went to the ER. A few minutes after I got there a man came in with a friend. The friend had his leg wrapped in seriously bloody kitchen towels. They put him in the bed next to mine with just a curtain between us. Apparently he had been using a chainsaw and hit a knot causing the saw to bounce. It went to the bone in his leg 4 times. He kept saying he was going to start screaming. His friend kept telling him it was OK to scream. The staff kept saying "Don't scream you'll scare everyone else here." Of course I was a low priority, The staff came by and apologized several times. All I could do was point next door and tell them I understood, and that if that was me I'd have been screaming long before I got there.

Arcnadius,
Hope your husband heals quickly
