Hi there. My girls are just about 22 weeks now. One is barnyard mix, BLW and barred rock. It’s the barnyard mix that’s having the GI issues. I ran out of grower before I could switch them to layer feed. So I had to do the switch abruptly. I will say they have had perfect poops before this. It’s been almost three weeks since the food change and one of my girls is having watery diarrhea. Not an increased amount but when she goes it’s like straight water pretty much. No blood mucus or anything else. I’ve tried poultry probiotics. I do have dewormer but I’m hesitant bc I’m concerned it’s going to cause more diarrhea. The other two aren’t having the same issue. When I changed from starter to grower - I noticed some runny poops for a few weeks after that as well. Never had this issue before.

Any suggestions ? Anyone have any experience like this that it took this long to clear up after a food change? Should I get a different feed?

Thanks !

Do you have photos of the poop?

She has no solids at all, not even at night when roosting?

3weeks is a good time period that her system should have adjusted, but she may need a bit more time.

What is the difference in protein from the grower to the layer?

If the poop doesn't firm up with her eating well and drinking the probiotics, then give her a little white cooked rice with buttermilk for 3days, this can be stirred into her food if you wish to do that or give as a treat.

Thank you for replying. I don’t have a pic but I found one on Google that closely resembles it. No weird colouring. No mucus. No blood. I am seeing some loose stool under the roost and cleaning it up daily so they don’t all step in it. The bedding is soaking up the water in it. She doesn’t seem to have frequency either. Just when she goes it’s wet. Other two have perfect poops.

Only other thing I can think of is maybe I’m giving too much black oiled sunflower seeds as treats? The only thing she is getting now is feed with poultry probiotics, water (with electrolytes and ACV) and some of the seeds for treats. Maybe the extra protein could be throwing her over the edge? I will add that they are in an enclosed run with sand. I’ll stop the treats for a while and see if it makes a difference.

I also decided to just deworm them to get that out of the way. I have a poultry vet close enough to me so a fecal test isn’t out of the question but $$$.

I’ll try the rice as well ! Thanks so much.

I'd also provide one water station with just plain water.

She may be used to Electrolytes and ACV, but on the off chance those are causing for some loose poops, I'd give plain too. Usually Electrolytes are only given for a few days during times of stress.
