I think the next thing on my list is peacocks and MAYBE guins. maybe A goose....  shhhhhh did I just say that? But not till next year as I gotta be careful with DH out of work for a while : (
There's a local guy with peafowl. I have precisely zero interest in keeping peafowl (noise) but I think it would be fun to hatch some. Have thought idly about seeing if he would sell me a few hatching eggs with a buy back agreement, or something...

Silver- hilarious as usual!

I'll bring you eggs once you get back

Maybe I'll have more by then

Sorry for your loss :'(
and NONE for Sally unless its OLIVE EGGER!
PLEASE don't! I really need to stop this madness, I cant keep up anymore.

Broody Cochin had chucked an egg out of her nest so I smelt it, NO WONDER! ewwwwww but she wont let me at her to see whats going on with the rest of the marans!
But the one that hatched inside has gorgeous leg feathering!! ach du gut!

Yikes... I opened up the first goose egg that wasn't developing. I was going to leave it in the incubator, but there were suspicious dark spots on the air cell so I removed it.

As soon as I made the first crack in the air cell, the smell hit me. Definitely a bad egg. I looked closer and there was some white growth in the air cell. Some sort of mold or fungus which is definitely not a good sign.

Next step was to break the membrane. I knew that the yolk was ruptured before I even started. I didn't see any embryo, but it's possible that the egg died before day 3 because of whatever the mold/fungus growth is. I dumped the egg contents into a bag and both the yolk and egg white were mixed together and were very watery. I looked at the remaining shell and there was white growth spots on the membrane where the egg contents were.

I've got an incubator full of a some expensive eggs and some of the eggs aren't even mine. I really hope whatever happened to this egg won't happen to the rest...

I will add that I found this egg near the water dish wet and cold. Hopefully it was those circumstances that cause this to happen to the egg and this won't happen to the others.
eeeewwwwww wonder how the yolk broke!

I had a serama egg in the run yesterday so I cracked it open, it was real dirty anyways and it had a solid like mini onion looking thing in the middle, you know those frozen baby onions you can get for soups? that's what was inside the egg!

Then you use it as preventative rather than a "cure".
As for my beagle we assumed that is what it was by his symptoms. He had pneumonia a few years ago and we had him treated, it was not cheap, the vet said he almost didn't make it & if it happened again we might need to put him down. He has a condition with his esophagus that makes him prone to it. When he started coughing again we thought that's what it was. I googled his symptoms and found heart worms could be the cause. The vet wanted to test & treat all 5 dogs and we couldn't afford it with a baby on the way. That's when I googled alternative treatments & found out about the Guiness. It was a better alternative than putting him down and more affordable than possibly treating 5 dogs. I figured if there was no change we'd figure out a way to pay for it. To my surprise he seemed better. That was last year and he is still with us. All of the dogs seem more energetic & quit coughing & butt dragging.
interesting, did he get pneum from the worms?

The vet said he has a condition called mega esophagus (or something like that). When he eats or drinks he gulps it down and the regurgitates (sp.) it, she said it got into his lungs set up an infection that eventually caused the pneumonia. She didn't test him for heart worms at the time though. Can the worms cause pneumonia? I never thought about that?
oh wow! the poor guy!

Hello all! I'm back online, finally after a battle to get internet. Drove over to the next town yesterday to get a dongle, it didn't work (turned out DH didn't put the voucher in to activate it

) Got a friend to go buy us another different dongle which I found is not "compatible". So a few phone calls later I organised a technician to come to us within a few days to install in on my laptop. Free of charge obviously. Not telling them I got the other dongle working since I spoke to them so we don't really need it anymore...

Hey, it's Africa, back-up's good!

Got a lot to tell, but I don't want to bore you all to death. It sucks to be back and nothing's changed really. And we're moving on again next week to our "while we are stuck in SA" accommodation. Good news is I got my incubator here intact! The customs were so slack in Dublin and Istanbul and we walked right past them "nothing to declare" in Cape Town with all sorts of prohibited items in our bags. LOL Darn if I knew that I'd have brought eggs with!! I probably would've pulled it off too. Seriously, they barely looked at our hand luggage and missed all sorts of things. Ahh well.

I see I am 100's of posts behind here so I'm not going to read through all of them, not now anyway. Did I miss anything interesting? And how are you all?

one of the blue eggs is to thick to hardly see through, and the other(which I believe is only on day 2 or 3) is porous

will it be ok? Inside it looked like a yolk attached to the side of the shell, but that's all I could see. I REALLY hope it's ok
