I have not been on the forum in three weeks, and I am not even going to attempt to read all the things you guys wrote!!! I am out of school!! I have been busy all day planting things and helping to finish off the chicken coop enough to put the birds in (which I just put them in now that it is dark!!!) They are comfortable on their perch. I will take a picture of it tomorrow, even though it is not completed (no run or paint on the walls. We just wanted them out of the house so it doesn't stink anymore, and it sure is great to have them out of here! I went out there with Basil and Sophie (I was terrified to pick up Basil, because he did bite my toe before, and I still have a bruise.) But I did pick up both Basil and Sophie and trudged them out to the coop. Then I got Hope... I am surprised they are not attacking each other, for they hate each other. They just slumped down on the perch and slept until I put Mary Ann and Maddy into their new cage and placed them in the coop with them (I had to sit with them for a while until they calmed down enough so that they weren't yelping out of fear. They are okay now, but I will probably go out before I go to bed and check on them.) Maddy and Mary Ann are significantly smaller than the other three, so that is why they are in the wire cage for now- so they can get used to each other in the coop. Hope and Basil can settle their own fights. Hope just defends herself from Basil (Basil is actually terrified of her, and when her does do his attacking rooster-ish pose, Hope holds her ground, and he is not used to that so he runs away. I think they will be okay since it is dark in the coop. I hope they will eventually get along.

Chads eggs mostly, I have a few cots and 2 polish and the other Muscovy (the other one had internal pip and is in hatcher!)

WHITE Crested Cream Legbar, Hoping for a roo!
Ok, Sally. So tell me about the first picture, with the eggs in the foam thing. Is that how you are turning them? How do you make sure they don't fall out. I've been looking into my hatching issues, and I'm wondering if I'm not turning them far enough. I have them in egg cartons and I'm moving them corner to corner. I'm thinking with large eggs this might not be enough.

Oz- according to the weather channel ap on my phone it was 97% humidity this morning. Now it is77% percent after the sun came out and dried up some of the puddles. The only hygrometers I have are in the bator.

I will check it in the morning and see if I can get a screen shot for you. We are supposed to get more rain tonight. High humidity could be an issue like you know but I think for Wescott there was something else going on. Early embryo death and a full term chick that pipped internally and died. What are your thoughts on it?

After my first incubator experience that completely failed I was considering selling the bator & quitting. I started reading about hatching eggs and found out some bantam eggs are tough to hatch & shipped eggs suck (figured that out lol) mine were both lol not so good for a first timer. Since then my kids discovered ducks & are in love. I started looking around for hatching eggs locally but had no luck. I decided to give shipped eggs one last shot and ordered some duck eggs from eBay. I'm on day 4 and couldn't wait anymore so I candled them expecting to find a bator full of scrambled eggs, to my surprise at least half have visible veins & development. I'm so excited! I know it's not the best hatch rate but since my first batch was a complete fail I'm happy. So far so good :-D

Help! I had one late hatcher that I assisted . . . there was very little blood so I got the shell off but left half the outer andcinner membrane on. It kicked out and it's belly isn't quite closed. It's not bleeding out but probably needs another couple of hours to close. I put a warm damp paper towel around it and closed the lid back up. It's chirping away. Anything else I should do? I hope it makes it for the other little chick's sake. Having a partner would be better. <3. Praying for my little one!!!!

Doug any word from the vet yet?

I hate humidity. I walked outside and was dripping

I use triple antiobiotic ointment with great success on the bloody navels

Dont get me wrong. High humidity is very hard to control. In Wescott's case its probably a major factor.

I just had 15 eggs that pipped or started zipping and just pooped out and died. Big wet soggy chicks in the eggs, That was with a constant humidity of 50%

The thing I have learnt over the last 3 remote hatches is to get as scientific about the hatch as possible. I have been teaching Bernie along the way. He has been candling for the first time this hatch and doing well but in order to really understand, we need to weigh eggs and try to get as close to the dry hatch conditions that I have so much success with in my little SoCal apartment.

So for me - I will now set up a spreadsheet with a dozen sample eggs and have Bernie weigh them every 5 days. I failed to bring a scale on the last two trips so I put one in my laptop case yesterday so I wont forget it on July 3.

I will build into my bator a dehumidifier

this 35 pint machine should dry the bator right up. I will set it at 30% and start from there.

Not all of us will be successful. Environment is a big factor, I can take losing 200 eggs to get 50 chicks.(I will be happier when I hatch 300 but God help me and Bernie when I do) but many cant. If I could buy chicks - and its not an option - it would be much cheaper but then I would not have such a challenge.
