Hey all, incubator fired up. Broody took some shell off one of the eggs. No damage to the membrane thankfully. I'm going to candle later and see what's going on in there. Chooks sneaked some eggs under the broody while I was "off sick" and then the second hen went broody, so I now have eggs due to hatch, eggs nowhere near due to hatch, one egg with a detached air cell

and 2 VERY broody hens who are dying to share a nest, so long as the other hen is not sitting on the eggs

I finally, after asking for 3 days got the European adaptor plug so I can plug in the incubator (If I change the plugs I lose the guarantee). Not a dull moment here...

by covered, do you mean that you want to stop predators/bird exposure or do you mean totally covered as to dry the ground?

edited to add: this was directed at sally, i thought i had quoted LOL.
needs netted or covered, I have a plan now. we will use thin wire or cable cheap and then wire up the netting as best we can, my place will look like crap but whatever they want at this point

I dont understand why everyone else can free range NPIP PT & AI clean chickens and not me! grrrrrrrr

i always keep all of mine covered and penned. its just to dangerous around here with hawks, coon, coyote, dogs, possum, mink, weasels, skunks, and cars.

you have some expensive stock. ive always thought of it this way - is a $75 dollar chicken worth loosing over a $10 pen? this past summer i was raising a group of rhodebars, basque, and sweedish flower in a grow pen. i knew the tarp was getting old and frayed, but i put off changing it. to make a long story short, the tarp tore and i woke up to a yard full of somewhat rare chickens (17 total). i went straight to town and bought a tarp, was gone about an hour. when i got home, i had 8 left. while i was putting on a tarp, i seen a hawk take another. in a matter of an hour and a half i lost 10 chicks valued in the neighborhood of $300.00.

Update on damaged egg in incubator:

We have a pip!! (Look very closely at the fat end of the egg, you should be able to see it)

I've always worried about hawks. I see them flying over our barn every so often. They make me nervous, but I haven't had any problems yet.

How big of a space can a hawk fit through? There are some gaps between the dog kennel panels on top of the run for my geese and ducks.
