That does makes sense.

My cockerels were both puffed up, eye's closed, and they were motionless other than the occasional shiver.

My rooster kind of looked like that the other day. He has been acting normal since. Hope he recovers from this.

Getting a cockerel back from the guy I gave them to. Borrowing him back in exchange for some pullets. Works for me. I have eggs coming from someone else too.

I hear you, I am keeping everyone in the coops, but my birds are starting to show some tiredness too... they do not talk to me and stuff when I go to feed and water, they are just simply existing.... but the way a birds metabolism works, I think this is all a natural process for them....

let me find a cool read for you! I think I posted this before but you have been terrible busy with your education! Now this is in reference to wild birds and I havent investigated how chickens/breeds fall into play here.... but it all makes sense!

Torpor

Many birds will enter torpor to conserve energy during cold winter nights. Torpor is a state of reduced metabolism when the body temperature is lowered, therefore requiring fewer calories to maintain the proper heat. Most birds can lower their body temperature by a few degrees, but torpid birds have lowered their body temperatures by as much as 50 degrees. Torpor can be a dangerous behavior, however, as the reduced temperature also leads to reduced reactions and greater vulnerability to predators. Hummingbirds, chickadees, swifts and other types of birds regularly use torpor as a way to survive cold temperatures.

huh, I always thought torpor was an adjective, I didn't know it was an actual diagnosis. Thanks Sally, youre a wealth. You too Oz, but I think I'm gonna pass on the CO2 euth. That's how we used to do it at Charles River and it would bring back some bad memories. The turkey died pretty quickly and now I am at the end of the eggs that were in the bator during the accu-wrong debacle so hopefully I won't have to make that decision any time too soon. My incubator warehouse thermometer is really nice, can't believe I dealt with those horrible accurites for so long.

We had to put one big Blue Brahma Roo down today, the splash and he had gotten into a spar at some point and the older one had infection in his head and it musta went throughout him, he was really looking terrible, and acting strange, so we did not process him for fear of whats in him.... I must say though that that boy of yours looks a lot worse than my boy, now I feel bad! ours was so docile we could push him over, it was very weird! I have been smart enough to grow out some other roos, a splash and a blue.... so along with the bigger roos (we have these two new guys who started with the girls) I am also growing out 4 CCL roos and 7 pullets lol.... call me paranoid, but this winter is absolutely terrible on these birds!! I found the BR frozen outside the otherday, we must have missed her at lock up! We cant get a break! and to think the serama and WFS are all doing amazing GO FIGURE!!

We had to put one big Blue Brahma Roo down today, the splash and he had gotten into a spar at some point and the older one had infection in his head and it musta went throughout him, he was really looking terrible, and acting strange, so we did not process him for fear of whats in him.... I must say though that that boy of yours looks a lot worse than my boy, now I feel bad! ours was so docile we could push him over, it was very weird! I hear you on that, my husband wants to eat a bresse roo and I'm not sure I'm willing to cull any, this being my first generation. If I lose any, I can't imagine the cost to replace them.

I bought one by Incubator Warehouse. It was like $15 on ebay. its really great, the temperature and humidity readouts actually change as soon as the temperature/humidity change. What a concept. And its pre-calibrated for humidity which is really cool.

One good thing! Today I got to meet some new people that happen to also love chickens!!! Another plus to the sale of a chick or two!!

a neighbor gave me Black copper maran eggs, isbar, and legbar, and tan ones are delaware in the spring I get Swedish flower chickens she is so nice.
