Ozexpat and anyone else that may know!! I think we discussed this at some point.... see below paste..... Are these infrared thermometers the same as the kiddos ear thermometer things? This may in fact help when trying to go through dark or colored eggs in which its hard to see inside... ALSO wondering how much more heat difference there would be at say DAY 18 of a live vs dead embryo??? Thanks for your help... I have not investigated much with the newly departed

other than ripping them open.....

Checking eggshell temperature
The only tool needed to do this is an infra-red thermometer, such as the Braun ThermoScan 4520. The egg shell temperature is an accurate guide for the temperature of the embryo itself.
Remember!
Eggshell temperatures must be taken at the equator of the egg (image 1), because over the aircell the reading will register lower than the true embryo temperature. Use eggs with live embryos as an infertile egg will not be producing heat.

The measured temperatures were used to identify the upside-down and empty eggs by calculating the average temperature of all of the eggs and classifying those eggs having temperatures at least 5 degrees less than the average temperature as empty or upside-down REFER TO TABLE ONE... http://www.google.com/patents/WO2000067566A1?cl=en

I would cover my bases and treat them for cocci. I brooded chicks in the house and didn't think that they could get cocci but after one dyed, I treated the rest and they returned to health almost immediately.
we will have to keep an ear out if anyone else getting chicks from them recently has issues too. did you have any bad poops? Some say that most times they dont have bloody poo!

Note: Correct dyed to died!
No bloody poo and I doubt it matters where they come from. May happen when the chicks get an overload of cocci from stress or a weak immune system.

OK so I'm treating for coccidiosis. Five days. They said that it won't hurt the chicks even if they didn't have it. So to be safe I bleach everything and started treatment. My question now is, if it was coccidiosis can I put them in coop with others in the future. Does the cocci go away or can they infect the others?

For one thing Coccidiosis is mostly a chick problem (up to a few months old) and as long as you treat them and they don't have it any more, there's no chance that they would pass it on.
Amprolium is a thiamine blocker, thiamine is what the cocci live and proliferate with, cocci is not a virus or a bacteria. They are a single cell protozoa.

thank you. I was so worried. I don't remember what was that I heard that you had to cull all your flock and start over. It was so scary to think that this was it. Wuf
