I went through that chart too. its got great info.

To make this whole thing really meat its goals I need to get some Australorps, RIR, and Barred Rocks. They are the ultimate egg producing dual purpose birds. Funny thing is they are not sexy enough for large sellers of eggs. The other top of the list is the Jersey Giant. Turkey size chooks will blow the locals away.

If it's egg you're after get Leghorns. Those things are laying machines. I've got 4 here and they've been laying daily in spite of the short days and carp weather. And I haven't been feeding layer, because I've got young ones in the flock.

I know leghorns are the best layers but I want brown eggs from dual purpose birds. there are battery hens in the phils pushing out white eggs - i need to position myself differently

I wonder what they'll say about green/blue eggs. When I was in SA still I told one of my egg customers about EE's. He thought I was joking! We don't get these chickens in SA. It's brown or white or speckled eggs, that's it. I had to look for Maran eggs pics and EE eggs pics here to convince my friends!

some of the eggs i took where blue. the locals were stunned. one was green but it became a stinker. not good fo the cause lol

Good luck with the hatch! (Almost said good "cluck") Guess that would be more appropriate.

I was wondering about that here. The house's heating is iffy, so upstairs is almost always cold, except for an hour in the evenings, downstairs is warmer, but comes and goes as we don't have the range and woodburner going all the time. Afternoons and evenings mostly. I'm considering putting the bator in the lounge as it's about the most constant temp. i.e. always cold LOL

I got a cute little bantam egg this morning, but I'm going to drive out to some people we discovered with chickens not too far from here and see if they got a roo. And what breeds they have. They advertised free range eggs for sale on their gate. I'm hoping they'll have something I can hatch.

There was a quote on the 'stupid things people have said about your chickens' thread that one lady refused to touch green eggs because they were 'moldy' and another gentleman who insisted green eggs were rotten and the seller was trying to trick him. Blue eggs would be a hit and green eggs might have a spot at the table but some people will freak when confronted with eggs other than white or brown.

I didn't know about the pretty coloured eggs until I discovered BYC. I was like "I want some!!" When I told people about it I could see they didn't believe me! Especially the Maran eggs. Wow, those things are so pretty! Anyway, talking about eggs. We drove out to a little farm that I spotted in our travels that sells eggs. No rooster

. They send me to another egg seller who had a beautiful roo, but different pens, so she didn't know which of her eggs were fertile and which weren't. She send me to yet another egg seller who I discovered was also a hatchaholic! He told us he set a whole lot of eggs yesterday and he said he's just finished building a brooder for 200 chicks! He only had Hyline eggs, which I'm quite happy with. He gave me 6 and wouldn't let me pay for them

DH who is more technically minded than me just assembled the incubator, but we discovered we need another plug in the room where we want to place it

We need 2 for the bator and another one for the heater, as the room is too cold. So, after all this we'll have to wait 'till tomorrow when we can get a double adaptor so we can plug everything in and get this hatch going

I snatched the surge protector we keep for the Christmas tree lights. Figured its better used than kept in a box for 11 months a year.
