Omg so many pages in the last few days...congrats on the hatch everyone. I've been trying to talk my coworkers into chickens! They all buy eggs from me but its fun to see the idea turn to an AHA! Moment when they find out they are zoned for it...I may losing egg customers but I'm gaining chicken buddies! Lol

My broody got up to eat this morning, so I went to check how many eggs she's sitting on... All I can say is thank goodness the incubator will be empty in a week and

I won't need it before then! By the way, she's a bantam...

Holy MotherLOAD of EGGS!!!

I have chosen a few breeds which I might get:
Cochin, Australorp, and Sussex.
I want friendly breeds for the most part. If they lay well, then that's better. :)
I am confused with my chickies. One has long feathers growing fast and the other has slow feathers. So I should assume that the short feathered one (Sophie) is a boy, and the longer feathered one (Basil) is a girl. My problem is that Basil is always acting roo-ish and jumps at Sophie and gets all in her face and acts all tough, while Sophie is as calm as can be. I don't want a mean rooster. What is yall's opinion?

Basil (the yellow one with the long, black patterned feathers) even has a nice looking tail. (You can't see it in this picture) but she/he is mean.
Sophie (the orange one) has no tail ('cept for little stubby thins as of yet.) And she/he is friendly and curious. This is the reason for me wanting to get more chicks- Sophie is always being picked on by Basil.
So what do you think? Boy and girl, and which is which? Maybe Sophie is a feminine male, and Basil is just a masculine female.

the chickens are growing up
They are awesome too! I love that even the chicken "ladders" have been notched out! I dont bother, but love that you took the time to notch them!

Broody Black Betty....

I go to let everyone out and black betty is standing at the door waiting to run out and I quick look to the nest and there sits Speckles, my newer splash cochin on all the eggs like she is owning them! sooooooo are they adding eggs to this daily? and wont this cause an issue and will they fight if they both are broody? I am going to go look at the nest again! maybe take the flashlight with!

SPARKY come out come out where ever you are!! please! 3D have you heard from her lately?

If they are both broody maybe split the eggs after candling. Put furthest along under betty and rest under the other one. Time frames will be closer. Also mark the eggs so you can pull out the extra adds. Also if they are where everyone else lays you might move them to where they can have privacy and wont have the other hens climbing on top of them or pushing them aside to lay. Just my thoughts.
