Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

I do love knife fish. I've had a couple African and Black Ghost knife fish, but a piranha is a different story, haha.

I imagine that someone will take him, but if not, I'll keep you in mind.
I'm sure someone will snatch him up fast also idk about where you live but there are a couple fish stores in my area where they would take em, not to sell but to keep as their own pet. They are always looking for fish like piranhas. My kids had a ghost knife he was so cool, they are so cute like a lil blind man sticking his head out of his cave sucking up brine shrimp like a Hoover vacuum cleaner!

Candle them to see if the air cells are fairly intact. If they are, then I would go for it. Wash the eggs with warm water and scrub gently.

I've done experiments on washing hatching eggs and I found that washing the eggs made no difference in their hatchability. If fact, one of my 100% hatch rates was with all washed eggs. I even washed a broody hen's eggs once and all but one of them hatched
So another truism down the tubes i guess.
IE (dont wash the eggs. the bloom will come off and germs will enter.)

The humidity is at 57%. The temp is still around 99.5. Is the temp ok? No other news to report. I have wet paper towels with one end in the water reservoir and the other ends spread out in the bottom of the incubator. The humidity still won't go any higher. Geezey peezey.

Temp is perfect. You might take a wet wash cloth and spread it out as much as you can. The more moist surface area you create the higher your humidity. I also like to put it under the tops vent holes so I can easily drop water thru them to remoisten the cloth as it will dry out a bit. What kind of incubator are you using?

I don't know that it has been proven false. I had a sick chick from a washed egg. I had washed eggs in with unwashed eggs so maybe the dirty eggs shared some germs. I don't know. I still think not washing is the best option but when given a messy situation I would take my chances but I would wash all the eggs in the bator.

So is there an award for worst hatcher ever? Maybe if I join the Easter hatch-a-long right now I could still win it if that award exists! . Listen to these awful stats.

Hatch #1... 28 eggs arrive, 6 are infertile, only 15 go into lockdown (bc I somehow killed 6 along the way) and only 6 hatch!! 1 wrong pipper was saved, one was killed during the "saving process" (it would have made #7). Eggtopsies showed an internal pip and a bunch of upside down dead fully grown chicks!

Hatch #2.... 15 eggs arrive. 8 are smashed in the box, out of the 7 only 3 don't have cracks, 2 of those have air cells rolling around like a carpenter level and YaY the last 1 made it, hatched alone on Sunday!

Current Hatch: long story short... Old old eggs finally arrive, like 10 days old. I give them a shot. I put all 12 in lockdown mainly bc I can't see into them.... Due Friday annnnnnnd, one just piped the wrong end!

I am not an idiot ... That I am aware of. Someone please laugh will me on this! It's so awful there is nothing left to do but laugh!!!

Chin Up! You're not alone. There are good hatches and bad hatches. Yeah, sounds like you've had your share of the bad, so hopefully your next streak will be a winning one. Most of your problems seem to stem from shipped eggs (a story we all know too well). Look around locally for some nice eggs, and I'll bet you have a great hatch next time.

Actually for shipped eggs it's not that bad. Shipped eggs can be very difficult and I've had my share of 0% hatch rates. Just look at the chicks that you managed to hatch and think positive thoughts.

Well, now I'm nervous! My Call ducklings are gonna hatch around the 13th. I am picking them up as day or so olds. I have an hour drive up and back. Are they that fragile????
dont be nervous... these were day to two day old chicks ( the ducklings did fine) and i didnt use enough hand warmers and it was a 14 hour trip .... !!! and my sister lost some of hers from the same batch and she did not travel... we are thinking maybe they just got a bad batch of bantams in at the chick store ... still made me sad .. i was checking on them as often as i could ... just should have checked a little more often but was trying my best to get them home ...

Well thank you for the love Cochins, gardeningmomma and hillflower! I guess when I read that shipped eggs were a 50% hatch rate I took it too literally. We ordered 48 eggs in hopes of 12 Roos and 12 hens or somewhere around there. 91 eggs later, 2 incubators and a crazy staggered hatch, here we are in the middle of this fun mess! I am getting some experience under my belt I guess! Haha, and 2 more just pipped.... The right way, but ohh 36-48 hrs early. Guess we will see in the morning! You guys are great though!
Oh and I checked locally. Only fertile hatching eggs I could find were broilers and RIRs. I will keep looking though, for now we will just finish what we started!
