I didnt know about the niacin and ducks..always love learning new stuff here ....my MIL just got us two new duckies so will tell them to make sure and do this !!!!

I saw that, thanks Sally! I'm just not sure if niacinamide is the same as normal niacin.

I'd better continue my research.
niacin and niacinimide are often interchanged but use niacin if thats whats recommended.

for the emergency treatment according to the link, the duckling needs 100mg niacin daily parenterally, plus increase niacin in diet. that means via a needle and syringe under the skin or into a muscle. you may have trouble buying that.

the capsules I saw were 250 mg. if you open the capsule, mix the contents with 5CC of water then give 2cc orally to the bird you will give 100mg but this is oral and the bird may react differently.

Thanks Oz! I did read that, but I was a bit confused by it and I'm definitely not doing injections. Many of the sources that I've read recommend adding 100 mg of niacin per gallon of water.

The problem is that niacinimide is the only version of niacin that I can get. The other options are "flush free" and "time release" and those can't be used for ducklings. I can't find hardly any information on using the niacinimide for ducklings and I have no idea whether or not it makes a difference.

niacinamide really should be ok but putting 100mg in a gallon of water may be ideal for prevention but if the bird has symptoms, it may need the bigger dose. i am not an expert in this.

i personally took non flush free niacin tabs once and i turned beet red, i was on fire and spent 2 hours under a cold shower till the fush wore off. it was nasty lol

The most basic difference between niacin and niacinamide is that the second is a derivative of the first. The human body can convert niacin into niacinamide after it is ingested.
