chicks here is from my word file.....

Here are links I have saved in regards to eggs.....

Egg shell quality is primarily dependent upon the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals in the diet. Calcium and vitamin D3 are the crucial nutrients involved in egg shell formation. Calcium functions in the actual egg shell formation. Egg shells are comprised of 95% calcium carbonate. Vitamin D3 is critical for the absorption of calcium by the hen. Poultry can synthesize a portion of vitamin D3 through exposure to sunlight but additional vitamin D3 is necessary in the diet. An excess of any of these major nutrients involved in shell formation can result in weak or soft eggs shells and reduced egg production. Purina

Diseases, Disturbances at the time a hen is due to lay can cause the egg to be held over for another day, Incorrect or changes in lighting programme, Water shortages.... see this

I candled my 2 late duck eggs and my funky air cell shipped egg and it got even funkier. Since the shipped ones air cell was stable and ran from above the middle to the top of the fat end of the egg I laid it down two days ago and it developed pockets all around the egg, I tried to take candling pics but I had to angle the flashlight to get the right angle to even show the new air cell pockets so the light from the flashlight made the pics a little unreadable. So I am putting pics of the pencil marks where I outlined them and the black sharpie mark is where the air cell has been since even before lockdown last week. So how hard is it going to be for him to pip or can he even do it on his own & should I continue to let it lie on its side or put it back in the carton? (the original air cell in sharpie is still there too)

I think the one that spread out all over the egg was probably detached. Are they still alive?

Hatch day was Thursday. It's so weird it is like the air cell is everywhere in little heart pockets that are attached to the original air cell. But all 3 babies were moving when I candled them this afternoon. It's driving me batty! I don't know what to do. I can't make an exploratory pip til they internally pip right?

Yes it was detached from shipping and developed into a saddle air cell then grew up to where it should of been just like the pic with the sharpie mark. But it seemed so solid that I laid it on its side two days ago since it was late maybe thinking it would help it pip & that's what happened to the air cell. I couldn't even tell until I was angling the flashlight to see the best place to find movement then saw the heart shaped one and explored more and found the other two pockets. But yes it's still moving although I have to tap on its shell then wait until he'll wake up for me. Seems weird

Quote: yes but start small and at the most likey internal pip area, see the article. SMALL as long as you dont mess with the inner membrane your ok, keep humidity up!
