Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

I have read about leg issues with new chicks and have eventried a time or two to deal with them, but I need a littel advice about this chick. She hatched out yesterday mid morning, seemingly without issue. My bator is at work and I had to leave early yesterday because my horses were having their teeth done. All 3 chicks were out, but this chick was still sitting in the bottom half of the shell. I hatched them upright in a styrofoam egg carton with the bottoms cut out. Two of them were still very newly hatched and wet, so I left them in the bator figuring on transferring them to the brooder this morning. When I got to work, the littel chick was still sitting in the bottom half of the shell. Poor baby was glued in there!! I ran warm water on her to loosen the eggs shell and gently removed it. She seems fine and strong, but her legs are sticking up as if she is still in the shell. She flops around the brooder if I do nothing, so I tried putting her in a cup. She sat in there with her legs up in the air around her head. So I wrapped vet-wrap around the legs to keep them closer together. She still kept them up along the side of the cup in front of her. Then her feet looked like they were swelling, so I had to take the wrap off...

Do I need to try to build something to put her in that will support her body and let her legs hang down?? Will the legs eventually straighten out on their own?? Will passive motion stretching help her to recover??

Thanks for any advice anyone has to give me!!
I am not sure how long she was stuck like that, perhaps you need to force her to stay into the correct position somehow and keep doing therapy and feeding and watering her>? got pics?

And once again I am behind and not going to read it all.

Doug-I think your brooder is awesome. Your chicks are living in luxury. Mine get a big plastic tote bucket and a red light. I do think i am going to try sand this time. I hate messing with pine shavings. I have sand in my big coop and love it.

I have the big totes too. But right now this is all I need.

I know I haven't gotten a lot of the eggs from NYhatch and I was looking at swap pages and I seen how many eggs these people owe! why on earth keep doing this if they don't send eggs? I would never want all those eggs hanging over my head! seriously!

Those swaps look like a lot of fun. Good thing I don't have egg layers yet, or I'd probably be in the middle of it.

I can sort of feel the pain. I bought some ebay preorder turkey eggs off a guy here on the forum back in December. Yeah, still waiting for eggs while I'm watching other people on the turkey threads who have had hens laying eggs for the last couple months. If he decides to send nothing, I have no recourse. Well, not none I guess. His name will be plastered all over another huge forum I frequent as a guy who takes money and doesn't send eggs. >:)

Last time I fall for that one.

I have been scouring craigslist looking for one like this. I don't do big hatches but these would work better than my tote buckets that they outgrow in a week.

I watch cl for those here too..one time I saw some they were already gonr

The black one I bought for my horses and it developed a leak because of my stupidity. The second one I bought at the local orchelins. They had it mis marked and couldn't find it in their system so I got it for 50 bucks.

That is as good as a Cl deal! I am always late to respond on CL too.
