Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Picked up my Heritage Dellies from the USPS this morning. All 26 alive and running around like crazy. No paste butt or anything. The 2 week old GLW's don't know what to think of them. The bigger birds running for there life.

Tried to put the Wyandottes outside yesterday with the 2-3 month olds. But that didn't work very well. Maybe if I left them there longer they would have gotten better. But decide to take them back in.

Post some pics of the GLW's. I just bought 3 more hens and a roo that are 3 months old. Im up to 9 hens/pullets and one Roo. I found one more Roo thats 6 weeks old locally that Im going to buy. I will be raising pure breds by the end of they year. I dont have a clue how many GLW/BLRW's I have with my chicks. I think a bunch. I love Wyandottes. The BLRW/Buff Orpington crosses are going to be pretty as well. I think I have about 30 BLRW's counting chicks and young birds. Actually Im not real sure and wont be sure until things get a little older. I will have three chicken pens in a few months.( I will need to build one more) BLRW's in one, GLW's in another and Buff Orpingtons in another and may even have one for the mixed Wyandottes if they turn out as pretty as I think they will.

So I am told that poults are dumb and need chicks to teach them to eat and drink, so is the game bird starter ok for my chicks??? I am confused!

Chicks can eat anyting. Or so Im told. Dad didnt have good luck with feeding his ducks medicated feed. Maybe they caught something else.

So..... Anyone ever have an air cell that has water in it on day 11?

So, I'm thinking now that I made a mistake...I don't think it's actually liquid INSIDE the air cell.. Maybe some of you more seasoned shipped-egg hatchers see this regularly. Is this just a typical "detached air cell"?

I'll describe it and maybe someone can tell me:

I think the membrane got separated from the shell a little bit...so it's still intact, but the membrane separating the air cell from the egg contacts is not tight. (Is this what "detached" is referring to?). I was able to mark the air cell if I set it horizontally and marked at the top of the egg, rotating it around. Once marked, if I held it with the large end up and tipped it horizontally, I could see what looked like liquid moving inside the marked areas. It think it was actually just the contents of the egg moving back into place (where it would've been if the air cell never got separated). It looked "watery" then, at day 11. Here are a couple pictures at day 13 with it less "watery" when moved...more like "jiggly" :



the solid line is where the air cell is attached to the shell. The dotted line is where the contents moved to when tipped set horizontally. So, if I set the egg upright (big end up), this line would slide down and be about level with the solid line. I noticed that the air space when the egg is horizontal is about the correct size for an air cell at this day...right? This is making sense to me now that I'm writing it all out. I'll be embarrassed if the pros are reading this and thinking, "yeah, we see this everyday..."
But to those of you who aren't familiar, I guess it provides a walk-thru for you

The one pictured and one other one are under a broody. (I brought this one inside the house to a dark room so I could candle, since it was day time...took less than 10 minutes). Another interesting thing about my experience with these eggs, is that starting at around day 11 I noticed that when I candled the eggs I would see droplets of liquid on the shell. I'd wipe them away, and they'd come right back. I'm wondering if this is also happening while under the hen, or just when I bring it out into the less humid air? And also, why is it doing this? Here's a pic, day 11 I think, before I marked it:



Last night, day 17, I was "taking inventory" and both babies are alive

. They both also had a couple droplets on their shells. And lastly, when tipped, it moved more as a lump or mass...no watery-ness, no jiggle....just WIGGLE (from the baby)!!

I'm glad I finally figured out what the heck is going on in there!! And I'm so sorry if this is all common knowledge.

I just looked at the Calender. I have hatches starting on these days, 7th, 11th. 13th, 14th, 16th, and 19th. 3 bators, 2 chickens and one soda pop machine.
