I didn't dare put it back in with the others

I tried actually rigging up our Excalibur dehydrator to keep it warm and humid with a ton of wet towels and bowls of water. It did not make it but a few more minutes anyway. My first pipper died having hit a big vein when pipping. I ended up drilling a peep hole in the others and found 4 were dead already. I have one RIW chick out, 1 Marans chick most of the way out, and 4 of the shipped Welsummers pipped internally but will have to be assisted to hatch. Every single on of them was in a horrible position. Pretty sure none would have hatched without assistance. All the shipped eggs are the worst. 3 pipped toward the center of the egg internally and could not reach the shell to pip externally. Their air cells were very wonky and their inner membranes were somehow dried out even though they weren't externally pipped yet. I see feet over heads, heads between legs and one may have birth defects - won't know till its out. I think I see one giant foot and one tiny one

I'm so sorry.

. That's so stressful!! My last batch of eggs was like that. By the time the hatch was over I only had 4 chicks out of 24 eggs, and I was exausted!

I only had black marans, are they cuckoo or something? white gened? IDK!! weird!

Post and ask here:

Wynette will be able to tell you more, I'm sure. She breeds Marans.

I cannot believe how tiny those quail chicks are... Has anyone measured one yet?

Turns out the chick's Mom had an affaire with an EE. Looks like I get a bonus Olive egger.

She's got a bloodline with Wade Jeane in it. Jeane crossed Wheaten Marans into this Black Coppers to improve egg color, so now & then a wheaten will pop back up.

Quote: Wow. I .................................don't know what I would do................I know what I would of done several years ago. Im older and wiser now but ..................................hmmmmmmm............................Accidents happen but thinking that he was going to make him go back to work makes me angry and its not my kid.

Missed so much while on vacation. I missed my little chicken family. Hope everyone is doing well. Came home to a broody sitting on a golf ball. Asked DH how long she had been there and he could not recall but he took her eggs everyday. So put her in her own kennel and gave her some eggs. So today is day one. Also came home to find a family of mice have taken up residence in closets so now I am cleaning all the closets and waiting on pest control guy to show up. Yay for me!

Quote: sorry to hear this. he's young, sounds like he's strong and probably a little head strong at 16 (most of us boys were). he will probably heal ok, ill keep my finger's crossed.

ive worked construction along with many other jobs. they expect you to work through "minor" injuries, and their idea of minor is different from ours. saw mills, and garages are the same way. on a saw mill i broke 3 fingers on my left hand (long story). if i left the other guys would have been out of work too, i traded a guy positions and stacked lumber one handed for the rest of the day.

in your son's case though, the guy should have probably told your husband first. him cleaning it was a good thing; concrete poisoning is no fun at all, im sure it could get much worse if internal. i think you have a good reason for being upset, but the situation - especially if this other guy is a friend - may need some understanding too.

i wish i had an idea on how to help him with the pain, we always just poured diesel fuel or kerosene on it and went on; im really not sure how safe this is. i can tell you that i never heard of infection from this - but im not a doctor either. we also done this just as soon as the injury happened, i dont know if it works later.

another thing i might do is go get some watkins or raleigh drawing salve. just in case an infection starts.

I went to work with a broken toe on two occasions, but you're a lot tougher than me I think. lol
