Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

since i haven't worked with frizzles yet, i thought i would look the information up. according to this it is ok to breed frizzle to frizzle, so i called a friend who has bred them for a few years. he said basically the same thing - if the chickens are split gene frizzled it is ok, but once you get 4 frizzle genes in the stock you will start having problems with feathering, when that happens breed back to a smooth frizzle split parent.

breed smooth ( a bird that is out of frizzling parentage not a straight which has no frizzle genetics.) to a frizzle (full blown feathering that is frizzle)
will give at least 1/2 frizzle and 1/2 smooths and NO curlies ie extreme frizzle.

Now when one has bred frizzle to smooth for several yrs at least 5 YES you can breed smooth to smooth and get some frizzles. Small percentage. The smooths have a modifier gene for frizzling it may be recessive but it is there.

now when breeding a straight feather bird ie: no frizzle gene to a Frizzle( full blown frizzle feathers) you will get a percentage of frizzles and the smooth only have 1/2 frizzle gene in F-1 so then you can breed the frizzle back to a frizzle for about three yrs and in the 4th gneration stop breeding frizzle to frizzle. The genes are set and dominant, in the f-2 & f-3 generation all smooths are getting towards full frizzle genes modifiers.

you see they only pick up 1/4 frizzle genetics each generation. do not breed back to a straight as it demerits the frizzle gene and adds more straight feathered genes in the pool.
As for male and female it does not determine the sex just the amount of frizzling.
to those that have not bred frizzles and kept records as I have well I guess you all just got to take my
word for it.

The original question was:
If I breed a smooth frizzle to a frizzle will I get a curly or a regular frizzle?
I'm wondering since the smooth frizzle already carries the frizzle gene.
Answer
No you will not get any curly's ie extreme frizzles. You will only get frizzle FF & smooth ff.
so go for it. extreme frizzle ie: curlies are birds that the frizzling has been done for several generations and has made the frizzle feathering tight narrow and wet looking. and the birds may not even have 25 feather folicle holes to grow feathers. a waste of space and money and got to be disposed of. neither heat or cold can it withstand.

3 of my 6 shipped barred rocks are hatched! These are the ones that survived the 107 temp spike the other day. Trying to decide when to candle the other 3 since they have no external pip. Its only day 21 so, what do you think?

if they are not externally pipped candle and see if they are internally pipped and check for movement

Candled and there was no movement - and they just "felt dead". I decided to open a peek hole into the air cell. Yep, as I suspected - all 3 dead. One pipped through a vein and bled out, the other two all I could see when I opened were yolk and butt.

Sorry but yay for the ones that hatched. Every hatch is different.

So here is how my August hatch is wrapping up:

3 Barred Rock Chicks hatched and the other 3 died before hatching from pipping a vein or being breech. One chick may have curled toes - waiting to see.

Candled my shipped Blue Breda eggs. Of the original 18 - 11 are still in the bator. 9 had clear wiggly chicks tonight on day 12 and 2 were questionable. I will be putting them into lockdown early in 4 days and will determine if those 2 indeed get tossed.

Candled my 12 hand delivered eggs. I appear to have one clear Partridge Penedesenca egg, one that looks like it stopped growing, and one Ameraucana that also looks like it has stopped. That leaves me with 1 Crested Cream Legbar, 5 Partridge Penedesencas, and 3 Ameraucanas on day 8 that still look good.

Of my mutt eggs it looks like I have blood rings in all of the White Leghorn eggs. I was told to expect that since they are just beginning to lay - but I did confirm that they are at least fertile. So that is something. The Marans eggs are too dark to see anything except the air cell so who knows with them.

And... my super precious Sweet Potato Quechua and Colloncas smashed shipped eggs are only on day 4 so no idea there, though my hopes are next to zero.
